The only Taylor lead is in the very beginning of the song. After that, Keith takes over. But the slide in the beginning (first seconds) is indeed tasty.

I was frankly suprised when I read that Keith plays the lead on this one. The lead has some lazyness I usually associate with Mick Taylor and I cannot think of another lead by Keith sounding like this one...

To my ears, Mick Taylor plays slide throughout the song, panned to the right, lower in the mix than Keith, who is slightly to the left. For example at 0:57 it sounds like Taylor, a bit reminiscent of Stop Breaking Down in sound and touch. Could be Keith though.

He does indeed, but he is turned down in the mix after the intro. Probably, they decided that it was too messy with two lead guitars.

So he might have played lead throughout the song, but that's impossible to hear - that was my point smiling smiley

Terrible terrible terrible lousy track!! Hate this song on the album.

Can't understand why people like this song??! It's just plain awful!
But hey, it's a matter of taste...

I've noticed something funny about Stones fans (or at least the people on this board). We all truly love the band's music, but we all seem to truly hate a handful of tracks, seemingly at random.

I'm with you as far as "Short and Curlies" goes, but I've heard similar sentiments voiced about songs I'm crazy about and can't imagine anyone not liking. There doesn't seem to be any way to predict which tunes will grate on someone's nerves.

Always liked this track. Musically Its a departure from their usual type of song, It kind of reminds me of Randy Newman. Lyrically its classic Stones. They do a good job on it.

But one positive thing about "Short And Curlies" needs to be said: over-all IT'S ONLY ROCK'N'ROLL sounds a bit uptight record to my ears (partly due to bad production, but also due to performances and song ideas as well), but "Short And Curlies" is an exception. It really is relaxed, naturally groovy piece. The most-EXILE like number by spirit.

Agreed! I'm not saying this track is as good as Turd On the Run or Just Wanna See His Face, but if Turd had been on IORR, or if Short And Curlies had been on Exile, I'm sure many of us would have rated 'em differently.

Dance Little Sister is perhaps the only other song on the IORR album with a relaxed throwaway feel.

Just throw the words "Streets of Love" out there and see what happens...

Yep, it would not sound out of place on Exile... This loose, "jam-like" feeling of "Short And Curlies" also has a lot in common with Plundered My Soul, btw. "Hide Your Love" also falls in that category. Numbers like these are (just) one of the reasons why I love the Stones...

Casino Boogie, Hide Your Love, Short And Curlies.

It isn't really a departure - more of a decline, imo.

It's still a blues, and I enjoy it thumbs up

In this song? you mean the intro? That is very nice indeed.

The rest is Keith.

I have always enjoyed this song and love IORR. A underrated album in my book. But long time posters here know how I feel about that album. This is a good straight forward song of hate to money grubbers who plagued Jagger's love life. A precursor to an entire concept album about divorce, Some Girls. Some tasty guitar by Keith, and some great singing by Jagger. A fun romp.

an insult to both guitar players isn't it ? to mistake keiths' soloing for mick's is an insult for mick and an insult to keith saying he cant play like that !

I am always amazed how some fans think every song has to measure up to songs like Gimmie Shelter, Sympathy, Or Jumpin' Jack Flash....artist create a variety of works...does everything that Picasso did stand up to his greatest works? Can't a song qualify as whimsy or a sketch? How about Matisse, his sketches are sought after, some are really bare bones and quite simple, yet some marvel at them. Some pay fortunes for them as well.
Does everybody like them? No of course not. Do they still show off his talent, absolutely....so how come that doesn't translate to music as well? It should.

it would have cracked me up if this had been the song that they had taylor play on for 50 and counting.

truly awful track, embarrassing to everyone involved that they released it.

Mick gave a lot of the songs on IORR disease, especially this one. The crabby lyrics ruin what could’ve been a fun, swampy Exile throwback.

When I read that someone 'hate' songs like Short and Curlies or Luxury i think about: Back to zero, Winning Ugly, Suck on the Jugular, Sweet neo Con, Look what the cat dragged in...these are very poor songs.

This could be Taylor on rhythm with Richards on lead with a Taylor slide overdub. The basics were recorded in Jamaica.

The lead isn't played cleanly enough to be Taylor. It sounds like a one take thing with overdubs.
