But but... let's go to the beginning... "Mona", "I'm A King Bee", "It's All Over Now", "Confessin' The Blues"..... the 'boy' nailed it.. There was that natural, innocent charm with that boyish spark in those early r&b recordings, which make them unique sounding and ever-lasting performances... And still already then, despite copying his idols, he sounded original, that is, nothing but Mick Jagger.. But damn, just listen how powerful his vocals in "Mona" are! And what a matured blues voice this 20 years old kid has in "Confessin' The Blues"!

The span from I Just Wanna Make Love To You to As Tears Go By tells something about how talented he was back then already.

Exactly... I forgot "Wanna Make Love to You" - there is so many of them, like Rockman noted...

No, he's still got more range as a vocalist!

Re: The greatest Mick Jagger vocal performances

Not sure about range, but Mick is certainly more versatile than the three (brilliant) vocalists mentioned here, imo.

More suggestions, Todd? Baird? winking smiley

That's what I meant, versatility of use rather than vocal range.

Absolutely. Thanks for mentioning this! This "early" period is often overlooked by many when it comes to "greatest performances of..."-topics here on this board. It's simply a miracle how at such a young age - not only Jagger, but he in particular could deliver such great and absolutely original performances.

To pick up DP's example "That's How Strong My Love Is": With a professional experience of (back then) 40 years under his belt, the usually strong performances of this song during the "Licks"-tour are really no surprise - but the true miracle is how he was able to deliver the outstanding studio version in 1965 at such a young age.

Apart from many performances from the early days, I'd also like to add

"I Don't Know Why", "Memo From Turner" (the soundtrack version, of course) and "Too Many Cooks" to the list of Mick's greatest vocal performances.

"No Expectations" and "Jigsaw Puzzle"

This is hard to choose because imo he is very stable. But talking about hard i have to mention he is not great when he is trying to be rough or hard and sing like Mick Jagger but forgets he IS Jagger(on the other hand is Crazy Mama good example of brilliant vocal performance it comes more naturally or at least not so self concious as 10 years later). Hope you know what i mean, for example 80´s song mostly, like Fight from Dirty Work too pretentious.

But those come to my mind as a favorite Jaggers vocals:

Heaven
Child of the Moon
Dead Flowers
For Your Precious Love
Through the Lonely Nights
Cracking Up
If You Can´t Rock Me
Paint it Black
Back Street Girl
Waiting On a Friend
Party Doll
If You Really Want to Be My Friend
Its all Over Now
Wild Horses
Watching the River Flow
Let It Loose
Honky Tonk Woman
One More Shot
Bitch
Don´t Tear Me Up
You Can´t Always Get What You Want
Luxury
You Win Again
Lantern
Fool To Cry
Mercy Mercy
Sweet Virginia
Hearts for Sale
Do You Think I Really Care
She´s a Rainbow
Jumping Jack Flash
Blinded By Rainbows
Memory Motel
Heartbreaker

I could go on and on but i end with:

Brown Sugar

Besides, so many nuances.

But I love also his "one-dimensional shoutsinging" (if that alludes for instance to UNDERCOVER).

And I do like both all kinds of his socalled natural singing and almost anything of what many characterize by the term "mannerisms".

As far as whitest black men singers go, I think Alex Chilton of the Box Tops on The Letter takes the prize. But he abandoned that voice later in favor of a sort of Beatlesque higer register...back to Mick: Pretty impressed with this one. What was he, 19?

Yeah, Cops & Robbers...how could I forget that one? Always been one of my favourites, too. Hard to believe that Mick was, what, 19, when he did this.

Just yesterday I listened to You Can't Catch Me and Can't Be Satisfied - great performances, too.

Thinking about it - in the whole catalog of Stones recorded songs one has to search very hard to find weak Jagger vocal performances.

One of the best. The majority here will disagree but his vocals in 1975 and 1976 are underrated at times. Often misunderstood. If you can't rock me in Buffalo is one of the best, couldn't find it now though.

Re: The greatest Mick Jagger vocal performances

Oh yeah, he did great stuff on those tours as well. The problem occurs, when people get stuck up in a few songs, where he is going into "character".

The best singing on Angie ever, apart from the studio version, was in 1976, imo:

A whole lot of awful.

As an exception, what IS awful after my taste, is the way the voices are used towards the end of the song "Melody".
