Great first half and a decent match overall.

Really bad quality on those penalties. Only 50% scored. 3 penalties straight on the goalie, 1 in the post and 1 beside the goal. Many amateur teams in division 8 would have done that better!
Sometimes you wonder why these players are paid millions and millions of dollars!

In a way it was good for the tournament that Brazil didn't go out at this early knockout stage. After all they are the host nation.
It would have been as if someone had broken the crust on a shepherd's pie if they had lost.

As one who follows the England team, they have lost 3 World Cup shootouts and at least 3 Euro Shootouts, '96,'04 and '12.

A recent shootout in the African Cup of Nations went up to 21 I believe. Cameroon and Ivory Coast in the last 6 years or so.

I was for Chile but I didn't really want to see Brazilian hearts broken, I was basically neutral.

As for that other game, just too bad.

imo, Chile deserved to win but you know how soccer is...unfair like life.
Brazil is not that strong...some players are even a bit brutal. It shows that they're not very confident.
I wouldn't be surprised that Germany or the Netherlands beat them.

Chile hit the goalposts with 2 minutes left in the added extra time so that was a tough pill to swallow.

I think Brazil had some sympathy to not lose as being the home team but I don't think they will get that sympathy as much now.

Colombia certainly looks good, sometimes teams like Brazil can regroup. They may have had opening game jitters and pressure from the home crowd.

All the same, Brazil survived their big game and that may help their confidence.

Neymar seems like a good lad, one could say you did have some falling over in that game by players. True. Heartbreaking for Chile.

I'm sure the Chileans didn't study this clip since they only scored 40% (2/5)
of their penalties and therefore lost the game. The key thing is to kick the
ball in "the unstoppable area" which very few of these millionairs are able to do:

Penalties

ha....live from the Brazil - Chile match. the camera panned the crowd and there were 2 blokes holding up an Argentinian flag with a painting of Mick on it....saying underneath "MICK PLEASE" ......I guess they are feeling left out in Buenos Aires

I think that's hysterical...I wonder if MJ thinks it's funny, or is embarrassed by it.

I'd hope he enjoy being 'topical'.

it's pure theory
in reality, most of goalkeepers move more or less before the guy takes the penalty which makes it not that easy to score.
Most of the time, referees let it go which is against the rule.

He's almost sure to have seen it, chilling out 4 hours before the Werchter show.....probably thought "Oh no, not South America too......will this tour never end?"
Seriously, I'd guess he'd be pleased with that (& thought it funny) and BA is pencilled in for ........???

It's statistically proven. If you hit the "unstoppable area" you will, most probably score. If you don't, your chance to score is less than 50/50. The goalie moving along the line is, of course, calculated for in that equation.
If you don't have a plan or focus hard enough you will fail. Even if you earn a million pounds a week.

So Dutch friends, showtime for you in just over 30 minutes. It should be a comfortable victory if you can play at the same level at that which you beat Spain but the Mexicans are able to play strong counter attack football so watch out. My tip is Holland 2 - Mexico 1.

If Mexico can keep Robben out of the game they will have a chance against Holland.

Mexico has a great goalkeeper, it's going to be tough to score.

If you look at the bracket Chris F posted above you might find that a final between Germany and Holland is quite a plausible one.
Maybe it's time for the Dutch to finally win the World Cup? 40 years after Johan Cruyff et al almost did?

There was a photo in the news a few days ago…..showing Argentine fans in a
Stadium in Brasil holding an Argentine Flag with the Stones tongue on it. I can't find it now, anyone know a link to it? Thanks.

Intense game so far and not just the heat! I see this going to extra time if not penalties.

Looks like Holland is on their way out of the tournament. Holland is 99% Robben, 1% the rest. Well, 15 minutes to go. If someone is going to make a difference I guess it's going to be Robben.
