984 Ways the United States Can Advance to the Next Round of the World Cup

As teams have wrapped up their World Cup group play over the last week, we at The Upshot have been obsessed with helping you understand the variety of possible outcomes: what teams must do to win their group, advance or, at the very least, spoil the fun for others.

We have published live tables that update as scores come in (as we'll continue to do), pondered what needed to happen to get an all-Americas semifinal and gone deep on the scenarios for the United States to get out of group play.

Keep Your Mouth Shut: The Danger of Human Bites

It was the bite seen round the world.

During today’s World Cup match, Uruguay’s Luis Suarez bit Italy's Giorgio Chiellini on the shoulder during game play. Instantly, no one cared about the score any more, as fans rushed to their keyboards to weigh in on Suarez’s unsportsmanlike behavior, and launch a thousand internet memes based on the incident. But while many are making this into a joke, in reality a bite wound is no laughing matter.

“Human bites are capable of transmitting infectious diseases,” says Jamie Quinlan, DNP, nurse manager of the emergency department at University of Utah Hospital. Quinlan says even what appears to be a minor wound contains high levels of bacteria -- in fact more than 600 types of bacteria are present in the human mouth at any time including strains of staph and strep. Those bacteria could lead to conditions like cellulitis, lymphangitis, or impetigo. A bite could also lead to transmission of hepatitis or HIV if those illnesses are present, and blood to blood contact is made.

There is no word on whether Suarez seriously injured Chiellini with the bite. While it was through the material of his jersey, Chiellini was showing off visible bite marks on his shoulder after the incident. Even if it didn’t break the skin, his bite, and any bite for that matter, needs attention. "You should wash with soap and water immediately and rinse for several minutes under warm running water,” says Quinlan. If the bite did draw blood? Quinlan says, “You should seek medical advice for all human bites that break the skin or cause bleeding due to the high risk of infection.” Above all else, do not put the wounded area into your own mouth because that will just increase the bacterial infection.

Chiellini is going home from the World Cup with no victory, but a part in one of the most talked about incidents during the competition. Hopefully, that’s all he taking home, and not a bite related infection as well. While Uruguay is still in the tournament, Suarez could face suspension from game play.

His biting may come back to bite him.

World Cup 2014: Luis Suárez banned for four months over 'bite'

The decision is not yet final and binding. An appeal can be lodged by the player or the Uruguay FA. "The appeal does not have a suspensive effect except with regard to orders to pay a sum of money." So an appeal would not allow Suárez to play in the Round of 16.

Biting is unacceptable. So is the slaughtering the french defenders were doing yesterday as well. Sakho should have gotten a life sentence after his assault, imo. Yet no one is discussing kicking him out of the tournament...

I´m not putting into consideration if we /me/you are god guys or not. I feel great empathize for everyone in this forum because of our passion for the Stones. People here do the most weird things in their following of the band, etc. Uruguayans like me, and like Suarez, do the same for football

Me, like all uruguayans, have this giant passion for our national sport, just like you and me have for the Stones. Probably very difficult to understand for a Nordic. I can tell. I personally have great Nordic friends and i know your ways.We are just different. This not make better one or another. I can tell that this biting, while not right, is much more harmless than other actions very dangerous between colleagues.
Suarez plays like a fan, that´s why we love him. He can make mistakes, but he gives it all...
Come on, we are talking about FOOTBALL in this thread not petty morals.
He is a transgresor, just like the Stones once were. Great courage.
On the other hand i can tell he is a consummatte pro, very low profile off the field, wife and two little kids, living quietly, and making lots of good actions besides the sport.
Fifa just killed him. 9 games, 4 months, cannot even get into a stadium anywhere in the worl, kind of criminal...

Thanks Rolling Hansie for providing the link to explain my comment... We're kinda busy at my office this morning and I was slow getting to it. How dare my job interfere with my posting!

Hope you enjoy your salad today Koen (if that's a local slang from where you're at, I'm going to need a translation that maybe Hansie can help me with!) On the salad theme, maybe the German team can join you in spirit by needing to pull grass out of their teeth after being ground into the pitch by the USA for the entire game! (Yes, I realize that there's little or no chance of that but, as a fan, I think I'm allowed to be at least slightly dilusional up until the final whistle!)

Hope you enjoy the matches today! Hope I do too! Hope everyone does! REALLY hope that the USA fans enjoy a certain match (or possibly two, if necessary) more than the German fans!

Peace,
Mr DJA

Just to lighten up the things a little bit here: while we're trying to predict the World Cup results (though this is fun), somebody had a better luck on this "bite case". spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

Bettor cashes in on Luis Suarez bite

When Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez apparently bit Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini, a man living more than 5,300 miles away was awoken from a deep sleep.

The man's name is Thomas Syversen, a Norwegian living in Trondheim, the country's third largest city. Syversen saw that Betsson, an online gambling site based in Malta, was offering 175-1 odds that Suarez, who had bitten other players before, would bite someone during the World Cup and, on a hunch, placed the equivalent of a $5.25 bet (3.85 euros) on the first day of action in Brazil.

"I had 32 [Norwegian] krone on it, so it was just for fun," Syversen told ESPN.com.

When Suarez took the apparent bite in the 79th minute, Syversen said he was awoken by a friend who texted him what had just happened.

Sure enough, Syversen checked and the equivalent of $916 (673 euros) was deposited into his account for winning the bet.

Andreas Bardun, sportsbook manager for gambling site Betsson, where Syversen placed his bet, said 167 gamblers placed bets on the prop.

The biggest winner was a Norwegian who won $3,300, he said, but he cited company policy not to disclose any of the names of its bettors.

In the United States, others were getting in on the fun.

The Fort Worth Vaqueros, a minor league soccer team that plays in the National Premier Soccer League, announced Wednesday that it will hand out free Suarez "fangs" to the first 50 fans to its match Sunday.

Suarez, as talented a footballer as he may be, obviously suffers from some quite serious behavioral issues. I'm glad to see Fifa have acted appropriately in banning him, but unless he receives some serious help and moral guidance, he'll offend again and again.

I've wondered the same thing. (Prepare for question from unknowing American) In American sports, it's not uncommon to hear of an official who is punished for messing up a call in the days after the game. Regardless of sport or level depending on the severity of the official's mistake. Does this happen in "FIFA"? Is it made public? Just curious as I don't follow the sport (except for maybe once every four years or so) so I just don't have the exposure that many of y'all do.

Note: My ESPN app on my phone keeps crashing anytime I try to follow World Cup but is doing fine for MLB updates. Apparently we've got a few Americans who are getting interested! Unfortunately now I've got to find a different way to follow from here at my office!
