<<John Lennon envied Mick and Keith, after all, for the band they were in, despite all that the Beatles were and had been!>>

Even the best of them would rather be someone else. That's why actors would rather be musicians in bands and musicians in bands would rather be actors.

John Lennon also envied Jackson Browne, as a songwriter. In 1974, when Lennon was listening to Browne's then new release, his Late For The Sky album and first heard Song For Adam, he commented, "I wish I could write songs like that."

It's a great solo in of itself but as OzHeavyThrobber wrote it doesn't fit the song.

I must respectfully disagree. I loved the whole package, song solo, and all since I first heard it.

He wrote that he partially agreed with Lennon. "Not my best solo", or something...

When I was in high school just getting into rock I would argue Beatles v Stones with a Beatles fan, and one thing I said was how crappy the Beatles guitar leads were. I said the only one worth a damn was Guitar Gently Weeps. The guy practically hyper ventilated. I found out later Clapton did that one.

Now that poetic innocence, and FUNNY.

my opinion:
I have never seen Lennon play "lead" guitar and i dont think he was lead guitar player at all. if im wrong pls gimme some exsamples. Keith's solo is fast and furious and pretty tasteful.

Be happy for not seeing John "play" a solo. He was definitely not "fast, furious and tasteful":

Not too bad for a freezing cold January off the cuff rooftop gig.

Lennon is not qualified to know what a good guitar solo is. The Beatles weren't good with solos. The kazoo solo on "Lady Madonns" comes to mind. Sheesh.

The solo on Something is great.

Lennon to George after Take 2: "What kind of solo was that?"

In The Beatles, the solos served the song. I would rather listen to a well-crafted Beatles tune any day than 20 minutes of Jeff Beck noodling, but hey, that's me.

Page 207-208:

"I liked John a lot. He was a silly sod in many ways. I used to criticize him for wearing his guitar too high. They used to wear them up by their chests, which really constricts your movement. It's like being handcuffed. 'Got your f*cking guitar under your chin, for Christ's sake. It ain't a violin.' I think they thought it was a cool thing. Gerry and the Pacemakers, all the Liverpool bands did it. We used to f*ck around like that. "Try a longer strap, John. The longer the strap, the better you play." I remember him nodding and taking it in. Next time I saw them, the straps were a little lower. I'd say, no wonder you don't swing, you know? No wonder you can only rock, no wonder you can't roll.

John could be quite direct. The only rude thing I can remember him saying to me was about my solo in "It's All Over Now". He thought it was crap. Maybe he got out of bed on the wrong side that day. OK, it certainly could have been better. But you disarmed the man. 'Yeah, it wasn't one of my best, John. Sorry it jars, old boy. You can play it any way you want.' But that he even bothered to listen meant that he was interested. He was so open. In anybody else, this could be embarrassing. But John had this honesty in his eyes that made you go for him. Had an intensity too. He was a one-off. Like me. We were attracted to each other in a strange way. Definitely a two-alpha clash to start with."

John played the solo on You Can't Do That and the first solo on Long Tall Sally. As he told Jann Wenner: "I'm not technically good, but I can make it @#$%& howl and move."

You aren't qualified to comment on music because you can't tell the difference between a kazoo and a tenor saxophone.

The only hit single--by anyone--ever to feature a kazoo solo was a post-Beatles release by Ringo.
