In England I would say The Verve. Primal scream have the grit for sure, but the Verve during their Urban Hymns era were simply untouchable (live and on album). Pity about the whole Bittersweet/Stones saga. Richard Ashcroft is an incredible frontman and I can only imagine where the band would have gone had they stuck together and not fallen out. Instead we are left with a reunion and Ashcroft solo's that are simply 'ok'.

I don't. The Verve sounds completely different than The Stones. This is not a quality judgement.
Primal Scream have some records (Give Out, Primal Scream, Screamadelica) that have some stones influenced songs. Even in their more dance influenced songs.

In the nineties you had a band called Reef. 'Naked' was a great single. I thought they sounded a lot like The Stones. And if I'm not mistaken; Ronnie's son has a band with Kenwyn House, the guitarist in Reef.

Not a quality judgement? Well it's my judgement so...erm... tough...cool smiley There is so much on Urban Hymns that points to the Stones, even outside of Bittersweet Symphony which i'm sure you know goes all the way back The Last Time by the Stones.Forget the top four singles, listen to 'Velvet Morning','Come on'etc. More importantly it was their live performances in the 90's that always gave me a Stones vibe. Anyway, that's just my opinion. You don't have to sound just like the Stones to be compared to them btw That would be boring and quite frankly impossible unless you are a cover band.

I still agree with petewasbristol although i see your point about Reef, i have all Reef albums and quality wise they're poor looking back, although they did a decent version of SMU albeit with slightly different lyrics. Anyone remember Proud Mary from Manchester? They actually covered Salt Of The Earth on their Noel Gallagher produced debut album in 2000 and the rest of the same album is Stonesy. Another band i love who are Stonesy/Faces are The Quireboys who supported The Stones here at Newcastle in 1990. Now they blow Reef out of the water IMO.

I agree. I used to be a fan and have all the albums.
But a couple of weeks ago Place Your Hands passed by on the iPod and it sounds horrible now. Although songs like Consideration, Naked or All I Want are still decent songs.

Saw 'em live once in the Glow-era and can't rememeber anything but the fact that Gary Stringer jumped in the audience.

IMO, here in Norway it must be Dum Dum Boys. Established either late 70´s (?) or early 80´s, I believe, and still going strong with great rock&roll and Norwegian lyrics. I will see them for the 4th (or is it 5th?) time this summer in my hometown. Guitarist Kjartan Kristiansen is a former heroin addict, a wonderful song and lyrics writer and of course a fabulous musician. Vocalist Prepple Houmb is also excellent. I have loved them dearly since I was 12 (many years before I discovered the Stones) and it is definitely one of my favourite bands during all times! cool smiley

Wilmer X. Maybe Tottas Blues Band (Ronnie toured with them 1988). And The Hives.

It's pronounced Purple Haze.

Or were you referring to Ace of Base?

Hi brothers and sisters! I need your help!
Can you please tell me what bands in your countries somehow are compared to the Rolling Stones, in longevity and success.
In my country, Portugal, it´s Xutos&Pontapés who opened for the Stones in Coimbra 2003 and they are now celebrating their 35 birthday.
For obvious reasons, I already know what band is in England cool smiley
Thanks in advance

None. It is impossible

In Hungary, the wannabe Stones is the Omega. Before they reunion every 5 years for a new anniversary and concert in the biggest stadium, they're watching the latest Stones 4 DVDs package. Established in 1961. I don't want to patch any youtube video.

..well, one for the reference and for fun, you won't believe it:

I would add Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers and maybe Alice Cooper to that. I keep thinking of bands from United States but many of then just don't rock like The Stones.

Yeah, I can't really think of any either, at least any that are still around. The Allman Brothers and maybe some Fleetwood Mac, but neither exist as they once did.

I'm from Canada, so clearly my choice has to be Celine Dion.

You obviously forgot about Chilliwack

Chilliwack is about an hour and 15 minutes from where I live. I actually saw them last year at a Labour Day 'concert' in the park a 5 minute walk from where I live about 18 months ago.

What I forgot about was Loverboy, Corey Hart, Men Without Hats, Bryan Adams and April Wine.

Oh well, at least we have Neil Young, Rush and also the Power Goats.

And The Guess Who!

While some of us still remember the Canadian Invasion of the U.S. from the early 80s and beyond.

This guy started out by playing the part of George Harrison in Beatlemania.

For the Netherlands:

Don't forget the Shoes.
In the 60's they had a worse reputation than the Stones. Later on they became a bit softer.

They still exist and play each year here in Leiden.
