Can someone post the Hopkins tape here, to make it possible to judge?

Rip This Joint:
Interesting bit: they removed all of Taylor’s guitar, and Richards plays the overdubbed slide guitar. This means that Taylor is not on the official version of Rip This Joint.
Rocks Off:
The little solo run at the end was kept, which works fantastically: just when you think the track is finished Taylor draws all the attention, making you want the track to continue, making you long for more. Just as with Sway, the fact that the solo ends makes it much more interesting than a long solo.

RTJ: What makes you believe the slide is not an edited version of Taylor's slide and that any overdub is by Richards?
RO: I think Carla Osen reported that the solo was cut off because they ran out of tape (presumably Taylor was her source).
While I don't agree with all the edits, I do think the horn parts were rightly trimmed on this one and wonder why the bouncing horn parts were tried at all. Is there some soul song those bouncing come from?

Can anyone post the entire release in the buy/sell/trade forum? That would be greatly appreciated!

RTJ: the slide of the official version is clearly different to the slide Taylor plays on the outtake, and is executed much less professional than Taylor would do. It also very much sounds like a close miked overdub.
RO: tape running out is rediculous, that just won't ever happen. I am absolutely sure they thought a short solo fading out early has more tension than a long solo, which also is not very Stones-y anyway.

Great contribution, Mathijs!
"Taylor's guitar just messes up the tightness of the track"
I'm not one of these Taylor bashers but I'm sure Keef & Mick often had that thought while listening to playback in the control room...

RTJ: yes, the louder parts are different.
However, the buried slide at 0.08 and 0.11 of the official version may be the same.
In any case the vibrato at 0.23-0.24 on the official version doesn't sound to me like the Richards slide of the Let It Bleed album, Wild Horses, Jigsaw Puzzle, etc.
(Some of the phrases on the outtake remind me of the lap steel work Taylor did with Champion Jack Dupree.)
RO: if I find the Olsen/Taylor source, I'll post it.
Taylor did "finish" the solo when the two performed Rocks Off at the Roxy in 1990.
