Pretty good song for the time.

For one thing, it makes the UK version of AFTERMATH indispensable, as it's the only place one can find the full-length version AFAIK.

I loved it when I first heard it in the opening credit sequence of COMING HOME which gave it a spin for me: I thought it was about a vet returning home and finding himself displaced by the changes in society: "You don't know what's going on / you've been away for far too long / you can't come back and think you are still mine / you're out of touch my baby / my poor discarded baby". Brilliant choice, Mr. Ashby.

...Lurv it... what a lovely put-down but it's gotta be the looooong version on UK Aftermath ..could smirk & groove to it all day ...

An absolutely outstanding version on UK Aftermath ...

Songwriting of the highest order. This tune truly gave notice to both The Beatles and Dylan that the Stones could rival them for anything they could muster.

The lyrics are brilliant street poetry, worthy of Smokey Robinson or even Dylan himself. Mick ups his own lyric-writing ante bringing in words not commonly used in pop songs like 'discarded', 'obsolete', and 'social whirl' to deliver a put down ofwhich Dylan would have been proud.

And it's all set to such an unforgetable melody that by the time the chorus of 'Baby, baby, baby - you're out of time' comes in we're all singing along.

People often cite Lady Jane or Ruby Tuesday as the prime example of the Stones using classical music for inspiration but I think that Out Of Time is equally classical in its construction. It's quite baroque (baroque'n'roll!) and sounds like something that Handel might have composed.

And let's not forget that marimba. I can't think of another pop song before then that had used marimba - perhaps some jazz standards or bossa nova song but not in the pop realm. It's one of Brian's finest moments - in fact Aftermath is for me the pinacle of Jones' contribution to the Stones' fabulous songwriting talents.

There are the Marimba and Strings version.

The Strings version has a more filled in chorus whereas Mick leaves a gap in the Marimba version and the Strings version has a better Spanish Guitar run.

The Strings version is Mick singing over Chris Farlowe's backing track, which is pretty strange.

Aha! So this is what happened.

"This version was, in fact, the backing track from the Chris Farlowe version, only with a Mick Jagger lead vocal, recorded in London in April 1966 as a demo for Farlowe."

"Out of Time" on UK "Aftermath" is a wonderful song and "Aftermath" is one of the Stones most important albums.

A great song, which earned its place on an excellent album!

Mick doesn't think much of it.

Well written and good bass line. Prefer American A'math without it but fits well on Flowers as a collection of eclectic ditties.

So-so. The Chris Farlowe version is the better known in the U.K.

No. It became a hit in July 1966. Aftermath came out in March.

I'd say it is an interesting song (rather than a 'great' song). As someone else posted, a lot of little things in the arrangement (and I'd add the recording itself). I think Jagger doesn't like to comment enthusiastically about it because of the nature of the lyrics (pretty nasty).

But to me it's a good example of Mick and Keith's developing songwriting in late 1965 - early 1966 (as well as recording technique).

Never been a big fan of it. It kinda drags, for some reason.

The tune is catchy enough, but it's the lyrics that make the song...absolutely brutal and brilliant.

Perfect zeitgeist ...helped further confirm the Stones' attitude!

Great tune it's somewhere in my TOP25....and After math is in my TOP10
