Well, you cannot expect the Stones playing it 20 times in one gig and say," ok guys, that's the best version for tonight".
They have played it a few times, though
Can i ask what your all time favourite song is.
I reckon the big four are:
Satisfaction
JJF
Sympathy
And Gimme Shelter
No more silly than your slightly peculiar obsession with Satanic Majesties and Brian Jones.
I'd love to hear your top 50....
I don't see that album or him as being the greatest thing ever, that would be silly.
and repetitive riff, not much of a song, certainly not a finished one ... agreed, how is this better than the 100s of other Stones classics!?
no doubt, we would find his answer to that 'silly' ... Is Gimme Shelter the best Stones song ever? I think I would have to pick it as my favorite. And since Stones are my favorite band, then I guess that makes it also my all-time favorite from any band, i.e. the best song ever, as silly as it may seem!

Monumental track. In my top 5.
Unfortunately, they never managed to do it as well as the studio version again - or to recreate the atmosphere on stage, imo.

Yes! But, I would have once, just once, like to have heard them do it live with Jagger playing the harmonica as the studio version. One of the great Stones conundrums as to why he's never tried it...I may be wrong, but I don't even think their are any boots of him trying it out live. Strange.

While you may have a bit of variety in everyone's top 4 or 5 I think it is almost without questions that you'd find Gimme Shelter within the vast majority of most fans top 5.
For that reason, Gimme Shelter is probably their best.
I actually prefer SFTD and JJF but acknowledge Shelter's greatness.

for me there are 2 many great songs to pick from this is one of the best but there is not a best track for the stones all the songs are good in there own right. this song worked for the time all the war going on a somewhat darktime in America because of the Vietnam war and music was the only way to get through it

GS is one of those songs you learn to appreciate only after you cross a certain age. I remember times when I couldnt understand whats it all about: the admiration etc. but now days its seen by me as the masterpiece by the RS. Many of the RS "greatest songs" are superb but you do not get the sence of 'em being genious. GS is definetly the one that should appeal to any none stones fan but a person who admires and appreciates masterpieces. I was lucky to be in HP2 where it was performed in a great way. Really like some of the 1972 MT fast versions too. even thouh they turn this song into a sort of rock fast track and leave behind all its dark evil sound of the studio version. Only the 1969 live versions (the few) really catch its original dark sound.

I don't think there is one 'best' song because there are too many great Stones songs (recordings and live performances, etc.). Same if you had a 'top 5.'

- Time Waits for No One (always do)

- Moonlight Mile
- Slipping Away
And I cannot tell which of them and why might be worse than GS. So perhaps these are the best Stones songs?...
