I sure do miss the Beat Farmers. RIP Country Dick.

Just so hard to believe it'll be 18 years in November. The S.O.B. would have only been 58 years old this year.

In case you were unaware, there is still a Farmers band about. Jerry Raney is the last one left. They play around San Diego. Joey Harris has his own group now, Joey Harris and the Mentals. Buddy Blue passed away in 2006.

Every so often there's a reunion of Jerry, Joey and Rolle, usually around either C.Dick's birthday or anniversary of his death.
I saw the last NYE show in Seattle. I got to know Dick a little & hung out with him after the show. A friend was managing them at that point. He was a good guy. Very funny. I loved the Pleasure Barons revue shows. They were wild!

...always felt like "Fool to cry" had (or even: could've used) one.

(An accordeon, for the record; not a bagpipe! Definitely nót.)

Agree completely.

I'm worried about his health, though, He's gained a lot of weight in his late 50s, and he's a big guy anyway. He needs to be careful.

Hey good call BowieStone! Loved that album and most of Dwights output over the years. Highly underated in my opinion and I wonder what ever became of him?

Not necessarily rock music but there are many French songs that use accordion to great effect. I was...am a great fan of Yves Montand, and numerous of his perfomrances and songs featured accordion.

A little story...Jimi Hendrix was telling me how much he loved Paris and reminiscing about The Experience gigs at the Olympia. He said: "The next time you are in Paris you must go to the Olympia and tell Bruno Coquatrix (the great impresario of the Olympia) hello for me." I went to Paris soon after and Yves Montand, whom I'd seen several times in the US, was headlining and the two weeks of performances were all sold out. I knew that seeing him with an adoring French audience would be very special, and I was almost in tears. Then I thought to ask the boxoffice manager where I would find Monsieur Coquatrix.

I upstairs to his office, gave Jimi's message to his secretary, and that night I was given the best seat for Montand at the Olympia. I was thrilled. And so was Hendrix when I told him his name was still magic at the Olympia.

One of my favorite Kinks songs, a very touching sad song but there is a nice accordian in it.

There is also a French accordion on Sitting By The Riverside from the Village Green Preservation Society.

Also, in the live mid-90s release To The Bone, the songs Apeman, Muswell Hillbillies and Do You Remember Walter? feature an accordion player.

Ray: "Let's do Muswell Hillbillies,...and send someone else to do what...Accordion! Accordion!"

Dave: "Somebody needs to know that they've got to go and get it, and where is it?"

Only the studio version of Do You Remember Walter? is available on YouTube, but one can easily see how an accordion would fit nicely to poignantly accent the song.

Great stuff everyone, thanks so much!

I think my Grandfather's accordion might even be from the 1910's, he brought it over with him when he came to the US from Italy. It's at my brother's house now, so I'm going to get him to dig it out and take a look for me. Lots of accordion on those old Italian folk songs and the old guy was pretty good at them.

This track held up the U.S. release of Mink DeVille's Le Chat Bleu album in 1980.

Rolling Stone reported that an exec at Capitol flat-out refused to release a record with an accordion on it. When the American version finally came out, "Mazurka" was not included and another song put in it's place.

I always wondered if that exec had issues because he was forced by his parents to take accordion lessons as a kid, and took a lot of crap for it from his friends.

Or if the guy finally got on board with the accordion when the whole World Music thing took off a few years later.

This is a very good album--especially the version with this song.

But doesn't that still count? Well, anyway, it's an accordion recorded to tape, because what is a mellotron but a big multi-layered tape recorder?cool smiley

Unless Chuck is playing the accordion sound on his keyboard like he did on The Worst for that tour. I suspect the latter...
