We should end this Stones V's Beatles argument right here and now with the fact that The Beatles are one of the most OVERRATED bands of all time.

It's just because they got there slightly ahead of the Stones, or any other band for that matter, they'll always be remembered for being the first. It's just like sport and athletics everyone remembers who was 1st. Doesn't mean to say 2nd and 3rd are necessarily not as good as 1st place, 1st just got lucky on that day. The Beatles just got lucky before anyone else, doesn't mean to say they're the greatest because lets face it they're not!

Seriously? Luck may have had something to do with it, ie timing but I don't think you can remotely attribute luck with the overwhelming contribution they made. It was like the Big Bang of music. And just when the hoopla should have died down in the mid 60s they evolved to be an even better band than they were before, with even stronger songs and albums. They led and everyone followed. They still sell more albums than anyone. ONE was the biggest album of the first decade of the first millennium. THIRTY years after they broke up!

Even though I prefer the stones, it is hard to overrate the Beatles for what was accomplished in such a short period of time.

...and we only remember first place, because they're first!

Unfortunately you might have just reignited the Beatles vs Stones argument Nasty Habits.

If you read through this entire thread (68 pages), you'll see the many reasons why the Beatles won this debate a LONG time ago!

I was humming that little breakdown in Birthday and started to think that perhaps Keith nicked it for what became Live With Me.

I've always thought Keith's signature opening riff for CYHMK was a reworking -or at least inspired by - the riffing guitar on the Beatles' And Your Bird Can Sing.
That might be stretching it a bit, but there are some similarities in tone and technique.

No real similarities technique wise. AYBCS is two separate guitars playing single lines.

thumbs up

I suppose by 'technique' I meant the descending/cascading notes being similar.
And the raw distorted tone. I've played guitar since I was a kid (self-taught), but am not a 'techy' so can't describe in proper terminology.

What's interesting is how AYBCS evolved though - early versions with the easy going vibe and jangly guitar bits, to the final crunchy version.

Re comments, you gotta wonder, how many musicians has smack messed up big time? It's the mother/big time of all drugs. From personal knowledge (no, not a user, but others), relationships with others, it kills all.
