The Rolling Stones copied everything The Rutles did 6 months later. Satanic Majesties is a complete rip off of Sgt Rutter. They also stole the title of Nasty's book "Out Of Me Head".

I have the first album signed on CD by the 4 members who appear in the film: Neil Innes, Eric Idle, Rikki Fataar and John Halsey. They did an appearance together at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood for a screening of the film and did a rare performance afterwards next door. Idle doesn't appear on the actual recordings, but played with them that night.

There was an official DVD release once by THE RUTLES I seem to remember. UK only?
Some of you Rutlesers have any information about this?

I've got the DVD, I don't think it's rare. I thought Spinal Tap was the funniest "rockumentary" I'd ever seen but then I saw The Rutles, the "prefab four"! Rikki Fataar played for the Beach Boys in the 70's and I saw him in 06 when he was playing drums for Bonnie Raitt opening for the Stones in Vancouver.
Ron Wood makes an appearance in the movie and is sitting on the roof top in the video for Get Up And Go. Mick's appearance is great.

I just checked internet.
There are two RUTLE-DVD's
1. ALL YOU NEED IS CASH
2. CAN'T BUY ME LUNCH (Only Eric Idle of the original RUTLES I believe)

Can't Buy Me Lunch came out a few years ago. It isn't very good (compared to the first one).

From a great French Anita P. interview I just read from the Rocks Off site:

M.C.: Did Marlon ever want to be a rock star?

A. P.: No, he works as a DJ from times to times in New York, plays some guitar, but I think that with what he lived through in his childhood, the Stones atmosphere, turned up to be an overdose for him. For a long time, he totally rejected anything connected with the band. Just to make his father mad, he only played Beatles at home, pretending they were much better than the Stones!

peace

I translated and typed that from my French Marie Claire, then posted it in 2002 to the Anita site I started in 1999. Glad it's made its way around the Internet.

It's funny to me that so many people still bring this topic up. It really is apples and oranges. Seriously. Both are fruits and taste great but both taste different.

First of all each band's influences are pretty much different. I think the Stones were influenced more by straight Blues, where as The Beatles were more influenced by the already established Rock and Roll or mainstream R&B.

The only thing that really bothers me is when people try to downplay the Beatles as wimps because of their suits and more radio friendly tracks early on.

Anyone with half an education in Rock music, knows that was all marketing and that the Beatles were from the streets of Liverpool, were roughneck greasers who didn't take crap form anyone, and who had paid their dues as rockers in some tough clubs in Germany and England.

I mean we all know the Stones early albums were far from the rough and sleazy image they put forth a little later on.
They too wore suits and had Beatles like hair cuts at one point.

Neither band could come right out as hard asses to the mainstream and expect to make it. Especially being from the UK where the US had rejected tons of British records already.

Beatles vs Stones Set List Smack Down
Posted by: Turner68 ()
Date: July 7, 2015 10:49

If the Beatles followed the Stones set list format, what would their show look like? Who would win in a smackdown?

1. Revolution (vs JJF)
2. Paperback Writer (vs IORR)
3. Please Please Me (vs LSTNT)
4. Help! (vs OOC)
5. You've Got to Hide Your Love Away (vs D&G)
6. (song vote) Tomorrow Never Knows (vs Let it Bleed)
7. Across the Universe (vs Wild Horses)
8. Back in the USSR (vs Bitch)
9. Get Back (vs HTW)
- band introductions
10. Something (George) (vs BTMMR)
11. Here Comes the Sun (George) (vs Happy)
12. Sgt Pepper/With a little Help from My friends (vs MR)
13. Let it Be (vs Miss You)
14. Come Together (vs GS)
15. Strawberry Fields (vs Sympathy)
16. Ticket to Ride (vs BS)
17. All You Need is Love (vs SMU)

19. Hey Jude (vs Satisfaction)

Does there really need to be a winner? It seems a bit juvenile.

If you're talking about now, Stones win because
1. John and George are dead.
2. Even if John and George were still alive, Paul's voice is really poor compared to even 20 years ago. As The Beatles were pretty much all about the songs and the singing/harmonies, they would not be much good anymore.
So finally you get the Stones victory you so desperately crave.

Personally i'd have liked to see the 2 of them play a super extended version of We Love You and the Stones arrangement of I Wanna Be Your Man with John and Paul doing the backing vocals on the choruses like they did on the Beatle version. Best of both worlds.

And still I ask why the need for a slapdown? Sones fans on this forum have a real insecurity about the Beatles.

Really, in my experience stones fans are busy talking about the latest shows or how to get tickets, etc. and it's the Beatles fans who suddenly appear with silly posts like "the Beatles were a great blues band". Contemplating a Beatles set list in 2015 is a bit like debating whether Spider Man would be a good addition to the Avengers.

Don't think I've heard anyone here call the Beatles a great blues band. I have heard many Stones fans belittle the Beatles as a mere pop band. All very silly.
