Substantial Damage is up on his site right now !

sc uk

is this a comment about that neighborhood??

btw: the song's crap. Maybe you can't even call it a song. A let down for sure

Ok, so it's not a "song" in the ordinary sense ... who cares? It's a raucous jammin' groove that slides and swings. I'll take this over "Trouble" any day of the week.

Drew

somebody said about "amnesia" that it's rather a sketch of a song, but this is more more true for "Substantial Damage" (I hate to say it – but it reminds me how important Jagger's role is…)

Oh jezz its relentless, the records got stuck
Can we just listen to it without Jagger getting in the way for 5 minutes

Damn - now that's different!

The riff is quoting that "call & response" section in If You Can't Rock Me, isn't it.
I shall go to sleep now yearning for morning to give this a proper listen

That Keith Richards sure is a Wild and funky cat inne

I was the "Amnesia" sketch poster. And, yes, "Substantial Damage" is even more so. These are grooves, sketches, jams, whatever you want to call them. They're cool, in my opinion, interesting, but they are incomplete and not memorable, in my opinion.

I have no idea what Jagger might have done with this--@#$%& it up, for all I know. All I know is that I'm pretty sure there is one group of people who are going to dig this: people who already love Keith Richards solo albums.

I'm not a musician and English is not my mothertongue so how to describe it properly? Substantial Damage is not my cup of tea, makes me put the volume down, sorry! It's too loud, nearly a bit annoying, some harmonies missing for my taste, maybe a bit too chaotic? For now a skip song for me.

Some of you on here remind me of the two old men in The Muppet Show
They used to see the show every week but always moan about how terrible it was
But still they would come along to watch it every week, just to moan

Well thanks for the rescue, Matt. thumbs up
the wait was getting silly long.

Yeah, the song has a jam touch to it.
Keith on megaphone, channeling Tom Waits perhaps?
Waddy's slide guitar puts a nice wrap around it though.

not the best but ok.

you can do better than this, young riffhards. remember: "serious adult conversation."

i was talking about my opinions of the music, not about what i think about people who might feel differently from me about the music. but you have to play the "moaner" card?

You can certainly tell Jordan was involved it the production, those drums are loud in the mix man!

It comes out of the gate at full speed, where ya gonna go from there? A very cool groove and I like it...but with the slide guitar the only real build in the tune it leaves me a bit hungry for more song structure.

Yeah it's fun, it's a funky jam, but a lazy attempt at songwriting. I can imagine this one if he would have started quieter and built it up to what it became, had a breakdown in there somewhere, more suspense and release...could have had everyone on board. As it is I like it, but my expectation of more of a song leave me slightly disappointed overall.

Raucous, funky, jammin' brilliance - what's not to like?
Crank up the bass, loosen up, get in the groove, and turn it up! thumbs up

The jams (Cross Eyed Heart, Amnesia and Substantial Damage) are very strategically placed on the album.

That's interesting ... but who listens to albums as "albums" anymore? It's about songs, no? Individual tracks? I guess, though, that Keith at this stage is not trying to hook new listeners; he's more about selling to people who've already been sold on his solo career. And maybe those people still, by and large, still sit down and listen to entire albums in a particular order.

Substantial Damage is one of the tracks that didn't fare too well on the bootleg in terms of sound quality, so I was hoping it would be selected for this campaign.

It's also one that stood out on first listen, reminding me of how Isaac Hayes used to take a funky groove and just jam on it for the entire song. Along with Lover's Plea and Something For Nothing, it adds a hint of Memphis Soul by way of the blues to the album.

And as I mentioned in an earlier post, Substantial Damage is what I always imagined Keith's mix of Might As Well Get Juiced might've been like.

This will make a great contrast. where there's light, there will be shadow.
other songs will shine more and the whole album will be interesting because of the variety. (I think / hope)

Great groove. But what does the intro riff remind me of? Midnight Rambler?

This is an old school album, and deserves to be listened to as one, imo. It's a nice journey - at least for me smiling smiley

Midnight Rambler, the middle part where where Mick sings "Don't do that".
