One Two or Watch It
Posted by: RockinJive ()

For years I thought Mick say "One Two" at the beginning of JJ Flash. A friend of mine says it's "Watch It". Most of lyrics web sites post it as "Watch It". On a few live recording Mick says "watch it" in the middle breaks before the main lick come back in. But I still say it's One Two on the studio version.

It doesn't sound anything remotely like 'watch it' to me. It's 'one, two', surely?

Pretty sure he says "more bacon" but I have a diagnosed case of lyricosis...

I always thought it was 'watch out'.

It took me a sec to figure out how you thought it was "one two". It took a minute but I see how you think it can be phrased that way. Personally, I've always thought it was Watch it so it took me awhile to figure out how you thought it was something else. I'm not positive, but if it is "one two" then I've been saying it wrong for decades. Every version I have thought its "watch it". I don't get why he'd count 1, 2 so quickly if thats what he was saying, but thats just me.

It's 'Watch it' Doesn't sound anything like '1.2'. Jagger often says a couple of words as a song kicks off, most times off mic but there are some boots where you can pick it up.

It´s "Watch it".

Not "watch me now", as he often sings winking smiley

It's clearly "Watch it!"

Why would he count in the song 15 seconds after it's already started?

If you were counting in the song, it would be 1-2-3-4, and it would be done at the beginning.

Besides, Mick may have been running about in the studio and either Brian or Keith was in the way and he yells "Watch it!" so he won't bump into them.

<it would be 1-2-3-4, and it would be done at the beginning.>

Well, Steven Tyler does one, two - two - two - two - so I guess everything is possible winking smiley

I've always heard it as, "Watch it." While we're on the subject, he says, "Get down" near the end of SFM, right?

Here, it's clearly, "Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, watch it."

I think he says "Get down boy", talking to Taylor I've always assumed. Like on Dead Flowers from L&G when he says "Play the guitar boy".

I meant on the studio version. He says it a couple times on the LP version. Interestingly, they're absent from the 45 rpm version, which was released four months earlier.

... to Taylor on the studio version of SFM? Just checking whether anyone's paying attention? spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

It's just plain "get down", and it's just another of those hip vocal addenda like "watch it"

I was always in the 1,2 camp, but listened to it just now and I think "watch it" might be the winner.

I am in the same boat....always thought it was "one, two".. I concede. "Watch it", it is.

Actually, Mick is giving a shout out to the Wattu tribe in Pakistan. They did some "favours" for him in the early sixties and he's just paying them back.

No! You're not! I keep listening to this now and wondering why everybody else seems to be hearing something different--seems crystal clear to me!

(I even slowed it down--plus the emphasis os on the wrong word if he was saying Watch it, which he isn't. grinning smiley)

Interesting that we should be hearing such different phrases, though.
