Brown Sugar (original version) it has the classic Stones swagger and raunchy throughout. Add to that the classiv GLimmer harmonies, edgy lyrics and roll.

Fortunately there are quite a lot....

Back To Zero, has a great groove.

For it to be the true Rolling Stones it would have to atleast feature Mick, Keith and Brian Jones.

Satisfaction. It was when they really became mega-stars, it's got that great riff, it had the sexual innuendo and tone of rebelliousness and DISsatisfaction, it's simple but brilliant. And you can dance to it.

Honky Tonk Women. This recording practically redefined the Rolling Stones sound and showcased what was to become Keith's signature and unique rhythmic phrasing in a way no other recording before it had done. The song's release I believe also marks Keith's first use of the now fabled open G tuning that was used on so many of the Stones hits that proceeded it. One could go as far to say that it marks the beginning of the Rolling Stones as they came to be known by so many. For these reasons the song is, in my view, quintessentially 'The Rolling Stones'...

Satisfaction of course, it's the defining Stones song. Whether you like it or not...

I assume you mean the average 12-year-old, as I can't think of any adults who haven't heard at least one or five or so.

I would loop together the chorus bits (where they sing the titles and main song melodies) of several of the hits of off Hot Rocks, and give this hypothetical someone the photos from the Hot Rocks gatefold to look at while this is being played. Do this a few times a week. When they turn 13 or 14, they'll start buying all the albums on their own.

That's how I was hooked in--a TV commercial advertising Hot Rocks that would play in the afternoon when I got home from school.
