I can't find the clip at the Double Door Club; I remember watching it on Youtube and Jumping Jack Flash that night was really good. Keith was out of mind, rocking out full blast. Anybody has that video handy??? Thank you.
Rock and roll,

I like the version from Gimme Shelter.

latter day versions
89-90 - too polished and clean.
94-95 - also too polished and clean.
97-98 - more distortion, a bit slower, more bluesy - great.
02-03 - fast but still raw and very thight - also great.
05-07 - nothing new here
12-13 - too slow, no groove and the chorus sounds horrible.

I always like Leon's version at the Bangladesh show (not that it's the best ).

This pales next to the Stones version.

Actually I like the version at the first L.A. show this year. Except for Midnight Rambler, the concert was pretty tame. Keith finally broke out of his slumber for a great Jumping Jack Flash. (Last flare from the Lighthouse?)

The Johnny Winter 1974 version is high energy which I really like, but I must admit, the original by the greatest band in the world is still the best.
Which performance by The Stones is their best,I would not know. There are so many. winking smiley

Any JJF by the Stones is a good JJF. My favorite song of all time.

I can't believe no one has mentioned the incredible version they did on the 1975 TOTA tour. Here's the version from LA Friday. This version just unleashes so much energy as it builds up to that amazing crescendo.

The original studio version is imo pure perfection - recording-wise and performance-wise. It's also one of the very few renditions where Mick is actually singing the chorus properly.

That one is hard to beat thumbs up

Dont like the 1972-3 versions. Sound live a cover to me.... 1969 are better but also of the same spirit of 1972. I think actually that the Copa 2006 version is good:visually as well as musically. HP2 seems to me as the best of the last tour. Glastonbury version was lifeless.

Essen 1970 is excellent.
So is saville theatre 1969 and the NY shows

The most grooving version is this one (who cares about the 'off tune' Taylor-guitar except mr. Ears himself aka Mathijs):

This is for sure a great version.

But I must admit that I also like the version Leon Russel did at the concert for Bangladesh.

to me it sounds like George Harrison did a lot of arrangement for that performance when you compare with LR's own recordings for the same periode.

And then there is of course Aretha

with what probably is the most Keith version of the song.

Gimme Shelter version - because he didn't sing it like it is on GYYYO live. At least the Gimme Shelter version is accurate.

How do you know the studio version is? It's probably take # 13 winking smiley

I love this version too. Mick T's leads fit very well -- it's not just "noodling" but some cool interlocking riffs that improve the groove.

I've never been too keen on the later MT era live versions, where he was in the habit of embelishing the main riff with a descending run at the end.
Always sounded a bit over egged to me.

I agree Spud.
1968-1970 for me..and maybe '71 if we ever get to hear a version!!

I can, but the widdling is coming from non original stones. It's like listening to The Beatles and having some guitarist come in and widdle all over all of the songs. grinning smiley

Authentic stones guitar widdling...

Why this one wasn't released is a mystery - the Stones at their absolute best! thumbs up

I also like the Rock n Roll circus version even though the riff is all wrong.

That's probably my favorite version aside from the studio version. For many years (before I discovered alternate tunings and such) it was the only arrangement of the song I knew how to play. I always liked Keith's guitar tone in that version, fat and dirty.
