"Can we be proud of our band?"

BV, to be honest i didn't expect Glasto 2013 to be proud of them...

Was the broadcast great? Did they pass the test from the BBC point of view? Can we be proud of our band?

I have been "out" for two days and see this thread has got 837 posts and almost 100,000 views. Is there a short version? Did miss something? Also I noticed right now there are something like 10 different Glastonbury threads on the first page of the IORR forum. Please give me the headline before I dive into the 10 threads and the 837 posts. Was the broadcast great? Did they pass the test from the BBC point of view? Can we be proud of our band? Certainly I am proud, but you do know me...

I thought the BBC broadcast was absolutely great. It came across really well and I thought the sound was good, especially for a live mix. Lots of non-stones fans were ringing me up and saying how good they sounded and that hasn't happened before. I think they have really won quite a number of new fans at the gig and from the TV coverage.

IMO the only big mistake was Mick was off key for the first verse of 200LY and quite noticeably so. Maybe it didn't sound like it live but on TV it was quite bad. 2nd verse on was fine though!

I for one am really pumped up for Hyde Park now.

I REALLY WANT TO HEAR GLASTONBURY GIRL!

BV, in answer to your question .......... EVERY single review (and I do absolutely and unequivocally mean EVERY review) has heaped praise upon the Rolling Stones for that performance. They not only lived up to expectations, they surpassed expectations. I've been flicking through various FM radio stations today whilst I've been lazing around in the garden on a nice sunny Sunday, and the Stones' performance at Glastonbury has been the subject of news bulletins and the talk of DJ's all throughout all of today; I've never heard of anything like it.

Proud ? YOU BET we can be proud !

Everybody (even the harshest critics here at IORR) thought it was great, and the band made us proud to be Stones fans thumbs up

It did (probably even more on TV). And he was a bit off on Miss You, TD and SMU as well. Nerves? I dunno. But he surely worked his way past that - and eventually he owned Glastonbury.

They sounded great and it was great to watch. Lots of energy! I kept saying to a friend "can you believe that Jagger is almost 70 years old?!?!"

He is the man!
He was of on the first verse of 2000 light years though. Didn't have the melody, listen to the 89 version and you hear the difference. During the middle part it looked like he had no idea where the song was going which was hilarious to see winking smiley
Awesome choice to play. Rambler, 2000 and Sympathy, great little set of long "different" songs!

I can't believe that they managed to mess up Start Me Up. They went wrong after Ronnies solo and didn't immediately go to the chorus. Check out Ronnies smile, brilliant!!!

Awesome concert!

Cheers,
Wuudy

"Satisfaction" is fantastic. Can't remember a better live version.

Jagger is soooo good when he lets it loose and allows himself to just dive into the music...I'm really blown away by his performance. Of course he's been off key a few times, but the passion was there and overall it was fantastic.

I must admit I love the band as they are this tour. They are not as "controlled" as on previous tours, they take risks. I love them for that, I really do and I appreciate them taking risks such as 2000 LYFH. And I don't care about a few bum notes at all.

Hi all,

I just got to watch and listen to the the BBC broadcast on youtube. Considering that is 'only' the warhorse loaded 2nd half of the set: what a miracle going on there! I used to skip the likes of MY, SMU, YCAGWYW, BS, let alone SFTD and Satisfaction for years and years because they sounded worn off to death to me and I did not see why to bother with musicians who look, act and sound as least as bored as myself when listening to them.
But wow, how different was today's experience: I feel blessed to have witnessed what I call the unforeseen, unexpected, mysterious reinstitution of the Rolling Stones' majesty.
Others may explore the details more carefully than me - I am too thrilled at the monent -, but allow me some observations:
- Keith R. on Sympathy - when was the last time he made use of his axe in a creative way on this number? When was the last time his lack of presence did n o t make it fall apart, together with the questionable post 1990 arrangement? the miracle materialised in Glastonbury. If that is what sobriety does for you, I will seriously consider quit drinking that much!
- Jagger: I too noticed some hesitant/tentative moments early on in 2000, but hey: wasn't this all in all a spectacularly different, adventureous, exciting take on this early gem? Vocal-wise anyway, plus the guitars that gave it an edge not known from the pedestrian Steel Wheels era version
- SMU/TD: for me no signs of a train-wreck here, quite on contrary the most consistent performance of SMU (including RW solo) heard in a long time and a solid, but not outstanding TD rendition (TD being maybe my absolute favourite, and of course I would like them to work it up a bit more)
- the interaction with the relatively young Glastonbury crowd: I am out of words
- Bobby Keyes: more versatile, funky and inventive than I have ever heard him. Seems to be on the same diet as our Keith.
- Chucky: bless him, he let the good things happen. Not overdoing it at any time. They somehow even managed to squeze some tasty well-fitting organ sounds out of him.
- Satisfaction: I could do without a guitar solo but the way it was rendered on June 29th I consider it a nice bonus and a well-derserved showcase for our Keith.

Good night.

Its so funny to read hard-die fans reviews when you are not longer one of them...you would think people change or at least, accept change.
Accept that just because the Stones change 3 to 4 miserable songs (you cannot say 2000 light years is a great song AT ALL, nor is factory girl: they might not be crappy songs but that doesnt make them remarkable good songs either) of a predictable-boring set list doesn't make it less boring.
Accepting that the only surprise left (and i am still surprised about that myself) about watching this guys play is that they still get on stage and play a song (the same songs they've been playing live over and over the last...40 years? -HTW,JJF,STF,SFD,YCAGWW,MR,BS, yes they have been played that long) you can actually recognize but hey, that doesnt mean they play it majestically or anything. Be a bit more objective.
Its funny to see how positive people are: "the best show i've seen" show after show. Delusion? i think so, otherwise you would feel a bit ripped off voluntarily after paying more than 100 euros when a cover band would be much more worth.
But if somebody says: "the music is the last thing i care about when i go to see the stones nowadays, i just want to see their faces regardless of what they do" that sounds less delusional to me than "it was a great concert, oh, now its glastonbury girl, oh, oh, and they also played 3 different songs than last time".
I dont go to listen to the stones although i once really liked them (and saw them quite a few times too, thanks god not too many). I prefer to keep the good memories. Id like being delusional but the more i appreciate music, the less appealing it gets to waste my money/energy just for the sake of watching old people playing poorly same old songs over and over again.
So i just wanted to see what i might have "missed" at Gbry and from what i heard and saw, i can tell i am glad i didnt go there to see the stones, it seemed pretty lame. Just an opinion. They will still be making money and you thinking they are great and its really ok!
