Semi 0T; Great slideplayers besides Mick Taylor
Posted by: talkcheap ()
Date: January 21, 2013 01:03

As we know, Mick Taylor used to be one of the best slideguitar players in the 70's.
He played in standard tuning which is rare and made his sound unique. Who else do you like playing slideguitar?

I'm pretty certain he's not in standard tuning for this one (which I think is the first song Taylor played onstage with the Stones. Sounds like he's tuned to a chord to me, but I may be wrong.

Robbie Krieger is hugely underrated and is often overlooked whenever any aspect of guitar playing is discussed.

Ronnie Wood is far surperior to Mick Taylor on slide guitar. It is a Ronnie forte.

A couple of lesser known slidemen
Dave Kelly (The Blues Band)
Peter Wells (Rose Tattoo)
Glen Ross Campbell (The Misunderstood,Juicy Lucy)
Oh,and someone you might know, Rory Gallagher!

- no. not even close. you can't even compare woody to taylor on slide, really. not fairly, at least. listen to woody's 78 live 'love in vain' and compare to taylor's live in 72 version, for example, or 78 live all down the line (woodys solo makes me cringe) compared to taylor in 72. not even close. woody is way choppier. nothing wrong with that i guess if you dig it.

but taylor was in duayne allman territory. although he could do both, he was a wizard in standard tuning slide work. and you can tell taylor does not really think about scaling when playing slide; he listens to chord undercurrents, he plays lots of major chord triads, and cool effects he puts in like using major 7th's a semitone down. lots of pull off's with the slide, too. totally differnt style then woody. and is obviously a BB King fan. you can hear it in his timing.

woodys best slide work was pre stones anyway, like with faces.

It's not rare, playing slide in standard tuning.

There are lots of slide players on both Wood's and Taylor's level:

Duane Allman
Ry Cooder
George Harrison

@ pinkdloydthe barber:

The lap steel and steel guitar work of Ronnie (Far Away Eyes among others) is often above Taylor's level:

If Wood's slide solos make you cringe (Hey Negrita), you better get your ears checked.

That said, Taylor was a fantastic slide guitarist. However, he changed his style - not so much for the better, imo.

Harrison's slide playing is a thing of beauty. It's one of the most beautiful sounds I've ever heard. I actually prefer Wood's slide playing to Taylor, as it's more rougher. Actually, they both have their own "sounds" playing slide. They're two totally different players, and I don't know we have to compare the two all the time.

Agreed.Love his slide on "Little Red Rooster" and "Moonlight Drive" from "Alive, She Cried". Real spooky.

Keith's slide on Love In Vain (the studio recording) is some of the most simple, yet beautiful slide work I've ever heard. Deserves a mention here, imo.
