A song way ahead of its time. The last song on many Stones albums always seemed to be the experimental one - Something Happened To Me Yesterday, On With The Show, You Can't Always Get What You Want, Moonlight Mile, Soul Survivor, Shattered, All About You and this one is no exception.

Sure is. Probably their funkiest track, and ahead of it's time as far as the "rap" goes.

This is indeed a masterpiece. A heavy slab of rock funk, unlike anything they had done up to this point. And they would succeed a few other times later in their career, such as Miss You. However, they would try to replicate it with very questionable results, such as Suck on the Jugular, which doesn't even come close, and is one of their more embarrassing songs. But I digress, Fingerprint file is full of dark menace with a wonderful rock edge. Channeling Curtis Mayfield, The Meters, and James Brown, Mick sings beautifully, rotating between quiet paranoia, to full force anger, convincingly commenting on Big Brother. Perhaps inspired by his friend's, John Lennon's, paranoia rants about being followed and tapped by the Nixon gang. As was mentioned above, Mick Taylor plays some wonderful bass, giving a full funk work out. I am sure that he learned this bonafide style from his time playing with Billy Preston, especially live with Preston's touring band. Keith plays some wonderful heavy gut bucket guitar weaving in a saint vitas dance with Jagger's vocals. Charlie as well plays a convincing funk back beat, that I am sure was inspired by his time with Billy as well. Then there is BIll's wonderful keyboard work. THis is one of those operatic Stones songs that is just a joy to play loud with the bass pounding the car windows. It slowly builds and builds with cathartic release near the end, until it winds down to an exhausted whisper . A lovely end to an underrated album, and a sublime kiss goodnight, especially on some high quality headphones. I love it!

One of my all-time favourites.

I always wondered what SIS stands for. Is it refering to the S.I.S.
(LAPD's Special Investigation Section)?

Probably refers to UK's SIS. The Secret Intelligence Service, better know as MI6

I believe MI6 were still using Box Brownie's back in 1974.

None of this Ultra Violet Light nonsense.

I don't consider myself just a "casual fan" but I wasn't familiar with this song. I'm just giving it a first listen now...
It's definitely got a strong 70s, Shaft-type vibe to it.
Masterpiece? Not to me. But it's kind of a cool change of pace.

Always has been a very interseting song. Has some amazing parts. I have to be in the mood for it to really get into it. I can't give it masterpiece status, the guitar parts seem dated. Makes me think it has a Billy Preston funk infulance.

Was it a Mick song or a Keith song? My guess would be that Mick wrote it.

The first version I had was on 8-track, and the other songs bled through during the quiet parts, as they tended to do on 8-track tapes. But the 8-track version of the IORR album was much better the the vinyl, same with Let It Bleed.
