Dont forget "Sheee-reeeex Dreee-iiive"...

HAHAH that reminds me of a game I used to play with a classmate - we'd phoenetically write lines from Stones songs as Mick sings them and try to guess whick tune!
We did that too! thats where that comes from

I love Doom and Gloom.

The only better singles since SMU would be: One Hit to the Body, Almost Hear You Sigh, Saint of Me, and maybe She Saw Me Coming. D&G is a top track.

I agree. Love Is Strong is the best one, but I'd say Doom and Gloom is right after that.

No.

I'd put all of these before it:

Hang Fire
Waiting on a Friend
Undercover of the Night
She Was Hot
One Hit (to the Body)
Love Is Strong
Anybody Seen My Baby
Saint of Me
Rough Justice

Best single since Start Me Up? Love Is Strong.

It works very well as a leadoff single but from a new album, I would expect more substance. I mean it's kind of formulaic for a reason and it succeeds at that very well.

What I really wonder about though is the Matt Clifford pre-production credit. Does this indicate it's as old as the Goddess in the Doorway sessions? If so, then why did they not use it earlier? What a missed opportunity.

<Is Doom & Gloom their best single since Start Me Up?>

Nope, best since Love Is Strong, imo.

It's not even the best new song on GRRR.

That reminds me of the Lennon (I think) quote when asked if Ringo is the best drummer in the world.

Answer: "He's not even the best drummer in the Beatles."

Lennon never said that, urban myth.

Mixed Emotions, Saint of Me, Out of Control were better.

I think it's a serious candidate. It's really a great song, especially in studio. Live is ok, but not so great.

as for doom and gloom, its up there with the best the band have released since early 80,s.

she was hot
love is strong
rough justice
high wire
like a rolling stone
doom and gloom

are the highlights of single releases in this time.

No, Mick recently said in an interview (that I can't currently track down unfortunately!) that it was something recent and that the way he worked on demos was him on guitar and Matt Clifford on programming. In that same interviews he said he'd sent sevevral tracks to Don Was and Jeff Bhasker and they came back him saying they were good but wondered if he had anything else...apparently at one point he gave them the "obvious track" D&G and they said it was great...why he didn't give it to them first was not asked.

short answer is "no"...but there might be a case to be made for post '98 (b2b)...if you're sticking to
to "brand new" material (i liked some of the new exile stuff). i like both of the new songs and
was impressed with their confidence in playing them at the anniversary shows. (unlike Mixed Emotions
which they always seemed uncomfortable with)...imo

better than the new ones from 40 licks and better than bigger bang.

IORR............but I like it!

I also like One More Shot better than D&Gbut both are good not great.

Hang Fire
Waiting On A Friend
Undercover Of the Night
She Was Hot
Harlem Shuffle
One Hit To the Body
Mixed Emotions
Love Is Strong

All of those ar better to my ears than thes two new songs.

For me they go like this :

Doom & Gloom
Love is strong
Saint of me
Out of control
One more shot
