Let's get one thing straight: the Stones have continued, in the main, to release some excellent singles since 1981.

Highwire and Streets of Love were bad choices; I happen to have a little bit of a liking for Streets of Love, as I'm the only one that thinks Jagger is taking the p out of Diane Warren power-ballads. Mick is a very good mimic, and Streets of Love is the Stones mickey-taking I Don't Want to Miss A Thing etc etc.

Almost Hear You Sigh, with Keith's mini flamenco solo, is a great track, and would do any band proud.

Doom & Gloom is fantastic though: I do love it, and I also like One More Shot.

Highwire is a great track !! very "Rolling stoned "...no connection with "street of love"....

I think it's the best Single for the band since the 70's!!!!! It rocks and they really dig playing it live! Was in the 2nd row on the 13th!!!

I loved this track from the first time I heard it.

It's pure Stones and I've practically frazzled my car stereo pumping this song out. And it goes down great live too.

Does anyone think it's their best single in 30 years or am I the only one?

BTW, I was not very sure about One More Shot when I first heard it (too derivative etc) but absolutely love it now. Loud, of course!

*I'm not including the (IMHO) 'lost single' of Plundered My Soul here

Here is my take on this: smart (and, to a degree, successful) effort by MJagger, but in the end a bland track without any lasting significance

It's a good one. The opening of One More Shot is gloriously wonderful.

....for what I would consider to be their last classic, commercial and/or popular rock track (that got lots of radio play-remember that?), that distinction goes to Mixed Emotions from '89.

It's vert good, but One More Shot is equally as good. Good stepping stone to eight to ten more brand new songs.

My thoughts on best singles since Start Me Up:

Rough Justice
One Hit to the Body
Doom & Gloom/One More Shot
Highwire and
(I suppose) Plundered My Soul

That reminds me of the Lennon (I think) quote when asked if Ringo is the best drummer in the world.

Answer: "He's not even the best drummer in the Beatles."

Ha-ha, John was too much. What a sense of humour.

Apocryphal story. Supposedly he never said it at all.

"Is Doom & Gloom their best single since Start Me Up?"

Yes it is.

I said it when it was first released and I still stand by it.

If only they could do 10 more of this quality.

One more shot.. not on the same level.

Nothing comparable to SMU which ressurected The Stones, but Highwire, Mixed Emotions and One More Shot would have my vote. As well as Sweet NeoCon.

Where was Sweet Neocon a single?

Awful bloody song. One of their all time worst.

I like them both, but if I had to choose one over the other I would go with One More Shot.

I just wish the opening riff sequence was extended for another Bar, let it settle in on ya, then hit the lyric...

So YES it is IMO as well

Well D&G sold 6 billion (approx)

and OLS sold 3 (yes 3)

That settles it.

I always liked Love Is Strong a lot as well (it had all the key ingredients)... but the chorus was a bit weak and it never came over well live either, unfortunately.

Doom and Gloom is classic 68 to 71 Stones by numbers with a sharp production. I really like it. Jagger's vocal is really strong and i like the lyrics better than the usual desperate attempts by MJ. Even the slight fakeness of the sound (did they use Abbey Road vintage drummer Gretsch kit on a loop ?) doesn't bother me and i'm quite the purist normally.
A far better self parody than anything since and including IORR which is where it all starts going wrong for me Stones-wise. One More Shot is really pretty lame to my ears. I just watched You Got Me Rocking after seeing it mentioned. Bleurgh.
I prefer Undercover to Start Me Up.
Anyway has there been a genuine (ie. not taken off an album) single by anyone since Start Me Up or even since Honky Tonk Women ? That was the last stand alone single release by any of the great sixties bands wasn't it ?
on a side note - I could live without hearing that bloody open G riff again. It stunted their artistic growth years ago. They wont do anything really good unless they find a new trick - like getting Nirvana to back them or something !

HAHAH that reminds me of a game I used to play with a classmate - we'd phoenetically write lines from Stones songs as Mick sings them and try to guess whick tune!
