I didnt realise until recently that there are two versions on the official cd...one runs at around 3 minutes and the other about 6 minutes...very weird! Does anyone know why this came about etc?

Yes this came about when Virgin remastered the back catalogue from Sticky Fingers onwards in the early 90's. They went back to the vaults and used the original masters. If some of the tracks hadn't of been edited down at the time they wouldn't of been able to of squeezed them on to one side of an LP. CD got round that issue. Other tracks on other albums had missing parts restored to like Time Waits For No One (I think that was another of them)

I have to say I think Slave is probably my favourite post 1980 track it has a great groove to it and if I'm not mistaken I think it's a Fender Rhodes piano on that track, well that just sounds awesome. Shame they didn't play it on the 81 tour. I think Worried about you and Tops are close behind it. Definitely the best 3 tracks off of Tattoo you. I think it's because those tracks originally date back to recoding sessions from the era between Exile and Black and Blue.

I think we have extremely similar tastes!

Maybe we do, do you happen to be a huge fan of the 69 tour?

yes, but I suspect not with the same fervour you have...oh well, we share tastes on TY!

Maybe not the best but certainly one of them!! Keith has never sounded more dirty/gritty than on this track and I love the vocal. One of my favorite songs from any era of the STones.

The problem is it's not really a 1980 onward song seeing that it was done in 1975.

Exactly, it belonged on Black and Blue.

TY is simply a Jeopardy category called Leftovers.

It lets the flavours blend doncha know....now why don't you go down to the supermarket, get something to eat, steal something off the shelves, pass by the liquor store, and be back by quarter to twelve.

Just to stir it up a bit. Every good album needs a hit song. SMU does the trick on TY. Without SMU TY would have been a mediocre album.

No, i wouldn't quite agree that TATTOO YOU would have been a mediocre album without the inclusion of 'Start Me Up', yet i don't quite see it as a masterpiece either, and as much as i believe Doxa as always makes some extremely valid observations, i just don't get excited about the album in the way i do the Stones output from the earlier period of their career. The first side (the faster side) of the original LP is rather inconsistent with only 'Start Me Up', and perhaps 'Slave', not falling into the trap of sounding somewhat generic, and maybe a touch too predictable. 'Hang Fire', 'Little T+A', and 'Black Limousine' may seem a cut above pretty much everything the Stones have recorded since, yet in a sense their assets have been valued so much greater as the years have gone by, simply because expectations have lowered as the Stones musical standards have declined so very greatly. That's not to say these songs have little to offer, because they work fine on a certain fundamental level, but they are nowhere near as enduring as one may have expected from the Stones just a few years previously. However, arguably 'Neighbours' is the only track on side one which genuinely makes less than a pleasing listening experience, thanks in part to the terrible booming eighties drum sound.

Side two (the slower side) is much superior over the longer period, i believe, with the (near) classic songs 'Worried About You' and 'Waiting On A Friend' bookending some great examples of musical warmth and wonderfully delicate vocals. 'Heaven', especially, is an underrated track in my opinion, and a classic of a certain type. Jagger, especially was still unafraid to experiment in this period.

TATTOO YOU works incredibly well though as a whole, especially considering its history, and in many ways its biggest triumps belong to Jagger, who vocally is the most consistent aspect of this album. Jagger's more mature vocals are extremely effective throughout, and perfectly complimentary to what the songs require. It's amazing to think post TATTOO YOU Jagger began to lose his sense of perspective when applying his vocals, so greatly. Musically, too, which has already been noted, the album does have a uniformal and crisp sound, despite its contents originating from different periods of the Stones career. Bob Clearmountain did a great job in that regard (except for one noted glaring lapse of judgement). For me the album is probably worth a 7.5 out of 10.

I much prefer "Black Limousine". "Slave" does have a good groove.

Despite the love for "Tattoo You", when it came out, and even before
it was known to be outtakes, I still consider it, next to "Some Girls",
sorta like a cold pizza found after having not eaten in twelve hours.
Particularly after the largely horrific "Emotional Rescue", which
sounded to me as if they were serving a platter of crumbs to the
frat house crowd.

Well put, Edward Twining. "Mediocre" was maybe a bit to harsh. Approved or fairly good a little less so. It's a pity though that they never have managed to do the songs from TY any justice on stage.
To use the word mediocre in a better context: The live versions of the TY songs have been mediocre. Maybe with one exception - Black Limousine. I have never liked their live take on SMU for instance.

But some songs just never sound as good onstage...IORR for instance. I love the studio version...just never quite cuts it on stage.

Probably (even though most of it was cut in 1975 and 1979)

Only 'Continental Drift' since then runs it close.

I said this before. Slave is a great groove but nothing more. After ten seconds you have heard the whole "song". I like it anyway because I like the groove. It lacks the classic elements of a "song" though.
