The definitive 1972 clip?
Posted by: hbwriter ()

just something about this - the way the band blows by Mick at the beginning and he gets caught up in them as they pass the point of no return through that curtain - like they are going off to do battle - into the darkness - into the madness.

and just listen to the ROAR of that crowd - it is not sweetened - that is just raw - true fans - at the end, too - the new yorkers are eating it up - maybe my favorite Stones clip ever

no limos - they leave in a freaking station wagon - if you watch the earlier Cavett clips from this day - you see jagger transform - step by step - i think the only time it has ever been captured on tape - jagger becoming JAGGER (and just LISTEN to Nicky) no band was ever better than this, in my opinion

What is that "image"/"reflection" of the stage/band at 4:16 ?

It seems like a mirror....??

Mick engaged, singing properly and energetic - no running about everywhere.

A delight.

i haven't watched the clip (can't right now) but a suspended mirror was part of Chip Monck's revolutionary lighting set-up

Yeah this is the best year after all.

Most definitely. I had written in some other thread recently how much I LOVE the clips of Jagger and the band waiting behind the stage. Whenever there is footage of RIGHT before he goes on - the roar, his concentration, and then the explosion of his energy.
In this 72 clip watch when he turn it on at 0:40 second; gets into gear.

I was at that show and the energy from the crowd was insane, and the band played like a train with no brakes,l think the audience reaction here even topped the one at 75 shows...

AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING!!!

What about the 'intro' and 'outro' of this show? Is that 2000 lightyears and lady Jane?? Was that the regular concept in 72??

Taylor's tight little solo at 2:20 and his wind-up that starts at 3:30 are delicious. I have seen criticism of Taylor's playing on SFM from people who are used to something else. But it is playing to create an effect and as HBW says, the effect is (psychedelic, if you will) madness. It IS the closer after all. The horns are just daft (particularly in '73) and Jagger's running around (and playing) like a crazy man. Nice to hear the very elegant Nicky so well.

The mirror reflected the stage lights which were mounted behind the stage. It probably kept the spots from shining directly into the performers eyes. It also had the added bonus of opening up the seats behind the stage for sale. If you had the right angle you could see the front of the stage from the back. That was seat I had at the NicBenCon 6 months later.

Agree with you there, both on BS and SFM; I dig those licks and also the wierd mood he created on SFM

It works for SFM, but not so much for Brown Sugar, he seems to de-sex it with that legato minor sounding lick he seems to play on everything live from 1971 onwards.

I asked Chip Monck whose idea it was to play those two songs - 2000 and lady jane - - he told me it was his - he also said, that if his guys ever missed the red light cues during midnight rambler, there was hell to pay from Jagger afterwards

The mirrors were used to help lessen the long distances the spotlights had to beam in the larger places - remember the technology wasn't what it is now.

The New Barbarians drug the mirrors out of the closet for their tour in 1979 also. They also drugged lots of other mirrors! winking smiley
