That was true in my case. I asked for a guitar when I was 15 because I wanted to play Wild Horses. What about you?

Most definitely. I wish I could say that this was the only way they influenced my life.

I think so.
I loved Beat/Rock music in general but it was the Stones and Charlie that made me play drums in the first place. I loved his drumming on YaYa's.

What an excellent thread. Yes, I began playing guitar at age 14 or 15 primarily because of them Stones influence. Unfortunately, life got in the way and I did not stick with it consistently so I became more or less an on again, off again guitarist much to the displeasure of my guitar teacher...

No, but Paul McCartney did. After seeing the Beatles perform Hey Jude on the Smothers Brothers show in 1968, I started taking piano lessons.

Hell yeah! My first exposure to the Stones was hearing Ya Yas at age ten. It blew me away. Shortly after that, I got to see how cool the Stones looked onstage in Gimme Shelter. Keith gets full credit for making a guitar player out of me. And just like Keith stole from Chuck Berry, I gladly stole every lick Keith ever played.

Yep... Stones and Beatles were the first inspirations for me to learn to play guitar.
Began playing around 1968 ... age 11.

Great thread!

Sadly, my voice comes and goes so I will never be a threat to Aretha!
I've known so many great musicians I wouldn't dream of picking up a guitar.
My piano talent is limited to a really naff version of "Silent Night."

Definitely. I picked up the guitar because I wanted to play like Keith Richards. 32 years later, I still can't, but I try and I try and I try and I try.

Brian Jones was also one of the people who made me want to play the harmonica, along with Magic Dick and John Mayall.

The Stones have always made me want to play guitar and the strangest thing is I still have not gotten off my lazy ass and done it.

In my opinion, as long as you find enjoyment or fulfillment in the activity then it is worthwhile. Thanks for the J.Geils reference Whammer Jammer!

Yeah. I once posted a recording of me singing JUST ANOTHER NIGHT on Mickjagger.com (when it still had a message board). Just me and my guitar. To my surprise people there said I sounded more like a blend of John and Paul than Mick, which was hardly an insult.

Yep definitely. I still remember listening to Gimme Shelter with my eyes closed imagining how great it would be to play such wonderful music. Not long after that I went out and bought my first electric guitar, a Fender Telecaster.

The Stones more got me to emulate the bohemian rock lifestyle more that any particular urge to grab the guitar and be like Keith or Mick Taylor. I just wanted a girlfriend like Anita really. It was cool and hip to be a Stones fan and the whole package was one I could relate too.

The exception is when I got Sticky Fingers. That record made me pick up the guitar more than most, learned most of the tunes on that one. Dug the pictures of the MT era stones that accompanied it. Exile did none of that for me but Goat's Head Soup caused me to take notice again. By then I could play most of the chords anyway. Good question. peace

Excellent - the first song I clicked, naturally was Tumbling Dice! Great rendition!! I'm impressed because you guys don't try to "act" like the Stones..Again you guys should be proud!

yes...Stray cat blues offa Ya Yas....I needed to know how Keith drove the band with his playing. I have played most every day for over 30 years now. The other song that made me have to play was Baby Please Don't Go offa Muddy Mississippi Waters Live..the Guitar JR solo which made me want to learn to improvise.

Yup ...
The Stones and the Beatles.
Saw them both on Ed Sullivan for the first time and
decided with all those girls in the audience, I could do that.

I had started playing drums in the 5th grade but
when the Stones and the Beatles came along, I got my first kit.

Still playing today.

Nope, The Beatles beat them to it, which is funny because they'd been broken up for approx. 13 years. Phony 70's Beatlemania got my older sister so she passed it on to me via allowing me access to her albums. She had a LOT of Beatles, Floyd & Zep - the Holy Trinity of Good Rock.

The Stones influence came later in high school at the same time as Bowie for me. I was already singing, playing guitar and piano at that point.

Thanks to Noel Gallagher I started to play guitar and listen to good music. Thanks to the Beatles I started to play organ and sitar and thanks to Brian Jones I started to learn harmonica, recorder and a massive wish to get my hands on a mellotron.

Finally at 41, I made up my mind and borrowed my sister's acoustic fender last week.
The goal: Be able to play some Stones stuff before turning 46.

I got some of the that. It was the same reaction I had with Jack Daniel - HORRIBLE. That shit should be banned. It's awful.
