I was recently on one of Prince's fan forums and one of the topics was Keith Richards hatred for Prince. Apparently Keith called Prince an overrated midget and compared him to The Monkee's. I also read somewhere that Keith and Eric Clapton had a debate about Prince's music being influential or not. I was kinda suprise by this because I always thought Prince was the type of artist Keith would like.

Because Mick likes him?

Which was a bit laughable and pathetic considering Prince was putting out a couple of quality albums per year at the time, can play about 20 instruments and is (to my untrained ears, anyway) a more technically gifted guitarist than Keith is himself.

Anything for a quote, it seems. Standard practice for Keith to have a pot-shot at any artist (especially someone who's younger and more in the public eye - which was the case at the time), and a bit hypocritical considering his other platitudes about how the greatest tribute any artist can have is to say 'he passed it(ie 'the torch') on'.

Nothing new here.

His musical legacy is intact, but nearly everything Keith has to say verbally in interviews should be ignored.

There are exceptions here and there, but it's mostly nonsense and its been that way for decades now.

As Mick apparently had to say on more than one occasion.. "Shut up Keith"

I can't really agree with either of your assertions. While Mick was certainly
inspired by L Richard among many others, and Prince by Mick among
many others, both Mick and Prince seem to be true originals to me, in that
they each took things a whole lot farther than any of their influences...

Mick's more important historically (than ANYBODY as a matter of fact, even Elvis),
but Prince is no mere footnote...

I have read that Mick studied every move Little Richard made and Prince obsessively watched films of Mick's performances.

But as Keith said, nothing is new under the sun, musically speaking. The best any performer can do is take it a little farther.

First off, why were you on a Prince fan forum? Hopefully just looking at a car wreck....I think he hates him simply because he makes Prince type music. Isn't that why we all hate him?

I remember reading an interview where Keith said Prince had tried to 'upstage' the Stones, when he opened for them.

Keith was very upset about this, in that interview, saying 'you don't try to upstage the headliner'...

Prince is a weird little guy, no doubt! He does have a tremendous amount of talent, which seems to be pretty clear to even folks that have no real knowledge of music. Anyway, I saw Prince about 4 years ago at the Fleet Center in Boston...he kept the audience waiting almost 90 minutes, no apology, he just stalked on stage, very little to say to us, and I thought he was just OK. It was an attitude that I didn't appreciate, given the fact that ticket prices were above average, the wait was way too long---no opening act either-- and he looked mad at US!! I thought he was a little prick, to be honest. Yup, he can play guitar and sing but I know I've seen better shows. McCartney was 50 times better!

I can't stand Prince either but "talentless midget" is uncalled for. Leaving size out of it, (something that seems to be difficult for Keith), he is definitely talented. Pretentious is the word that springs to my mind.

sexual ambiguity is what annoys Keith. He's a blue-collar lad when it comes to these things.

Keith's jealousy has always made him sound like the ignorant fool he is when he's like that.

Keith is a jealous person. He has basically dismissed any artist that has come after him.

I kinda feel bad for people that miss out on such great music because of stupid and silly reasons like "Prince is a pretentious crappy porn midget" or "The Beatles are nothing but a poppy boy band". Oh well, whatever. Their loss.

Prince is among only a handful of artists that are on the same level as those that dominated the 60s. A great guitarist, songwriter and performer. I saw him on the Purple Rain tour in early '85 and it was in my favorite top ten concerts of all time. (Favorite being Stones No Security, Anaheim '99).

I think there are certain people on this board who can only stomach rock and roll music within a very narrow band. They probably only like the 68-72 Stones as well. I'm surprised they would belittle Prince for his questionable sexuality, which has been all been directed at women, even if he was wearing lingerie and heels. Mick, on the other hand, had for many years a slippery identity when it came to heterosexuality. It's hard to imagine Prince letting another man hump him on stage, ala Billy Preston, or Prince licking another man's lips on stage, ala Ron Wood on Saturday Night Live.
