I have never been to a bad Stones concert when JJF opened the show. No Security, especially. It's true that it's diminished when placed at the back end where they let songs go on too long, ala Satisfaction.

I remember hearing it fresh on radio, I guess May or early June 1968. I liked it, but you can't take things out of historical context. That summer was a monster one for rock music, with the double A-side Hey Jude/Revolution, Hendrix' version of All Along the Watchtower, Joplin's Piece of My Heart. It was more like the Stones were stepping up to the plate and competing with the big boys. This was their intro to the harder rock world of the late 60s. Satisfaction, only 3-years old, seemed like light years ago by then. And the Stones hadn't had a real chart burner in some time.

It's not like JJF dominated everything around it. A great, great comeback, next stage, whatever song for the Stones, but really only the beginning of their new chapter. I think Honky Tonk Women had a bigger impact the next summer. It certainly had a fuller sound and catchier drums.

while i disagree with you about live versions - i don't think it should ever be played longer than 4 1/2 minutes - i agree about the impact of the studio version when it came out, and the impact on the band's direction.

it was the first release of that period where keith controlled the band's sound and took it in a much more primitive direction.

play "she's a rainbow" (the previous single) next to "jumping jack flash" and the magnitude of the shift is crystal clear.

Was Child Of The Moon the transitional single in between there?

It was indeed the b-side, my bad. I was a bit mis-lead when thinking about the COTM promo video smiling smiley

They tried it once. In 1997, or was it 1994? Can't remember.

Is there a youtube of this anywhere?

No reason for professional musicians like the Stones not to pull it off. Waddy does it every time he plays the song and it always sounds great!

The pages below go into the JJF guitars. From the 2013 book ROCKS OFF by Bill Janovitz, Chapter 17:

There use to be, but I didn't find it the last time I checked. It was one of the pre-tour club gigs.

Lots of mistakes in that Philips chapter, especially about Have you seen... and Nashville-tuning smiling smiley

.. and what I've considered the greatest lyric in rock-n-roll history,
with Springsteen-style imagery. In ten words, you are dreaming about booze,
girls, and music in Memphis... and what happens next !

I added it to a revamp of MADE IN THE SHADE. It's awesome!

To get it right, Ronnie has to play the "pre-intro", or Keith has to change tuning.

But they should start with singing the chorus right, imo. Mick has only done that once (the first chorus on R&R Circus) smiling smiley

In all honesty, The intro really doesn't bother me that much, I just figure if Waddy can do it every time he plays the song (even without a second guitar), why can't the Stones?drinking smiley

Well, it bothers me a lot!! Not only are they ignoring/bastardizing one of the great song intros in rock and roll, but they are repeating a much weaker intro ... over and over and over.

That's kind of why I posted it here, in hopes fans would vet it. The Stray Cat Blues chapter isn't so much wrong as it is short on important lyrical "back story" the author easily could have found out with a few clicks here on IORR. It made me wonder about the JJF info.smiling smiley

4 or 5 guitars is cool on an album, but so hard to replicate on a stage... smoking smiley

Pre-intro is the time before the song starts ie silence. I'm pretty sure Ronnie plays silence just fine before the intro.

Ronnie did the silence bit just fine on the studio version.

I meant the intro before the riff drinking smiley

Love the studioversion. Never been a fan of any liveversion. If I have to choose one it's actually the 81/82 tour version. Like someone said....it's a totaly different song live. I miss the opening (studio) riff and the phycadelic feeling of the studio version. The only time they really tried it that way was in 89/90......but of course in a "Chris Kimsey Vegas" kind of way.....
