he Beatles also recorded a number of other songs during the session; interestingly, five of the six songs were never attempted by the group for EMI. The songs played were:

That's All Right (Mama)
There's A Place
Carol
Soldier Of Love
Lend Me Your Comb
Clarabella
Only one song, There's A Place, was a Lennon-McCartney original. What's more, none of the cover versions were recorded again for the radio by The Beatles, making this one of the most interesting of the group's 53 BBC sessions.

The 2 July session took place just over a fortnight before recording began for With The Beatles, and it's possible that the group were trying out potential material for the second album.

Carol was one of the songs on The Rolling Stones' self-titled debut in April 1964, almost a year after The Beatles' version was broadcast. The Beatles' attempt, however, wasn't released until 1994, when it was included on the Live At The BBC collection.

Sorry I'm confused here, where does it say that 'Carol' is an unreleased rehearsal?

@#$%& Hell! To compare The Beatles and Stones version of 'Carol' is like comparing the turtle with the hare...I remember why I'll choose Stones back in -64

Who is the better bass player? Paul McCartney or Bill Wyman?

And I want real examples of their playing, not a lot of hot air like, "Bill Wyman looks really cool chewing gum whilst playing, or Paul is a lefty, etc. "

Real evidence, not a lot of horse malarky.

One critic says you can hum along with Paul's bass playing, he is playing melody sometimes. Wyman is mainly playing with Charlie and following Keith.

Paul is a leader and Wyman is a follower in their bands.

For people who like rock'n'roll, this should be proof enough:

Pretty impressive. It does not sound like Bill Wyman on bass however. Is that correct?

You're right (for once!). That's what gives The Rolling Stones their unique sound & "feel", in that they follow the guitarist. Most bands follow the rhythm section, but not the RS.

Ha Ha You are comparing the man that wrote 'Yesterday' with the one that did 'Monkey Grip'.

Paul is of course.

If you listen to Whip (see clip above), you'll get one of many examples (live, that is) of Wyman making the swing out of one or two chord-songs, hence he is the leader in a sense.

As a rock'n'roll fan, I'm mainly interested in that swing - and that's why I like Wyman better than McCartney (wonderful as he is) as a bass player.

I thought the question was "bass player" not "song writer"? Are do you think they're the same thing? eye rolling smiley

uniqueness doesn't necessarily equal better. is a guy busking on the street playing guitar with his toes better than jimi hendrix? also, is keith not providing rhythm?

Well I'm a Rolling Stones fan myself, which is why I'm on this forum & not a Beatles, Hendrix of Buskers forum.

Sleepy City,

I think you are spoling this thread with your constant cheer-leading for the Stones. You might as well be shaking pom-poms and shouting "Go Team Go!"

I am looking for a serious discussion of the Beatles vs. Stones question. Not just reflexive support for the Stones.

What do you expect on a Rolling Stones forum?

If you want a pro-Beatles bias then I suggest you ask the question on a Beatles forum (they might even be able to help you with that 'Carol' rehearsal).

Anyway, I gave you evidence (I Wanna Be Your Man), but because it didn't suit your argument it was ignored.

Is MitchFlorida the same guy as Ferrante9, who used to spend his evenings with those posts about how Paul McCartney and Wings were so much better than the Stones. I thought that maybe he grew up or found a boyfriend, but perhaps not. . . .

Re: The Beatles or The Stones?

I take it back. I don't think that Mitchflorida is Ferrante9. I found one of ferrante9's classic posts, from October 2005. Ferrante9 was and remains the single best "Beatles fan with nothing better to do than sit up at night posting on a Stones forum". There have been many, and mitch is just the latest in a long line of 'em; but he needs to work on his craft to even come close to matching the pure trolling genius of ferrante9. Sometimes, I actually miss the guy.

BULL!!!!

WHAT IS THE LOUDEST SONG THAT THE STONES EVER DONE???

SATISFACTION??? IT'S NOT EVEN LOUD COMPARED TO HELTER SKETLER OR DRIVE MY CAR.

WHO MADE THE STONES WHAT THEY ARE RIGHT NOW???

PAUL MCCARTNEY....NEVER FORGET WHO WROTE "IWANNA BE YORU MAN".......BECAUSE IF IT HADN'T BEEN FOR PAUL MCCARTNEY, THE STONES WOULD BE LIKE THE MONKEYS.

WHY THE BEATELS WERE BETTER THAN THE STONES?

BECAUSE ALL OF THEM COULD SING, COULD PLAY, AND COULD WRITE MASTERPIECES.
CAN CHARLIE SING? GIVE ME A BREAK
CAN KEITH SING? GET OUF OF HERE.......EVEN WORSE THAN BOB DYLAN
CAN RON SING??? WHAT?
MICK??? THANK GOD HE CAN MOVE AND JUMP AROUND ......IF IT WASN'T FOR THAT.....HE'D BE AN AVERAGE SINGER.

EVEN RINGO WROTE SOME GREAT TUNES....OCTOPUSSY 'S GARDEN , DON'T PASS ME BY, PHOTOGRAPHS........

CHARLIE??? NOTHING

NOW LET'S TALK ABOUT WINGS.

WINGS WERE THE SECOND BIGGEST SELLING ACT INT HE 70'S BEHIND ELTON JOHN.

THEY OUTSOLD THE BEATLES AND THE STONES.......

THEY BROKE THE RECORD OF BEST SELLING SINGLE OF ALL TIME WITH " MULL OF KYNTIRE" WHICH IS STILL RANKED IN THE TOP5 OF ALL TIME SINGLES

THEY BROKE ATTANDANCE RECORD IN SEATLE IN 1976.......A RECORD THAT THE BEATLES SET 10 YEARS EARLIER.

NUMBER 1 LEFT AND RIGHT WORLWIDE SUCCESS!!!!!

ENOUGH SAID ABOUT WINGS.

SOLO MACCA

PAUL MCCARTNEY WAS NAMED THE MOST SUCCESFFUL COMPOSER OF ALL TIME.
SOLD MORE RECORDS THAN ANYBODY ELSE.
HOLDS THE RECORD FOR ATTANDENCE FOR A PAID CONCERT BY A SINGLE ACT.
RIO 1990 IN FRONT OF 184 000. THEY ALL PAID AND IT WASN'T A FESTIVAL.

HOPE OF DELIVRANCE WAS A WORLDWIDE SMASH HIT......THE STONES HAVEN'T HAD A WORLWIDE SMAH HIT SINGLE SINCE MISS YOU.

HOPE OF DELIVERANCE WAS RELEASED IN 1993. SOLD TONS OF COPIES.

HELTER SKELTER WAS THE VERY FIRST HEAVY METAL SONG EVER.........IT IS LOUDER THAN ANY OF THE WHO'S SONG THAT THEYE EVER RECORDED.

EXAMPLE OF PAUL MCCARTNEY VERSATILY

What kind of loser comes to a Stones forum and starts this kind of thread?

Beatles music has the feeling of great music of the past, like Frank Sinatra, or Glen Miller. They sing the songs in kindergarden classes, and Japanese use the lyrics to study English. It's great music, but it is of a certain time period, like much great popular music.

What kind of loser criticizes my thread and then adds three postings in a row on it? Apparently you are fascinated by the subject.

The Beatles vs the Stones debate will never run out of juice, at least not in our lifetimes. It's as big or bigger than Frankenstein vs The Wolfman, Nicklaus vs Woods, Thriftway vs Bardahl!
