Recommend me Three Stones albums
Posted by: southak ()
Date: April 28, 2011 11:14

Afternoon everyone.

On the way over to Dubai last week I saw a brilliant concert by The Rolling Stones called "Ladies & Gentlemen..." and it's brilliance reminded me a a gaping hole in my rock'n'roll CD collection - The Rolling Stones.

So guys & girls please recommend me three Rolling Stones albums that you think I shoudl start with to give me a stepping stone into the world of Mick & the boys.

Cheers,

Kevin.

Do not listen to Rik, he must be joking, you can buy Sticky Fingers, Get Yer Ya Yas Out and Beggars Banquet, three albums are not enough, you can get Bridges to Babylon as well.

Well, if he truly likes Dirty Work, he's a fan for life,

But ok,
Let it bleed
Between the buttons
Exile on main street

The album-suite of Let It Bleed (1969), Sticky Fingers (1971) and Exile on Main St. (1972) are pretty much considered their best. Me myself also wanna push for the latter album Some Girls (1978), which I think is equally good, were the Stones adapted punk & disco to their sound; it's brilliant.

But since you appreciated "Ladies & Gentlemen", which contains material of two concerts from the tour following Exile on Main St. you should probably go with that record. You can't go wrong, these are some of the best albums ever recorded.

Three albums? That's not surely not enough. If that's all you can afford, then you should
probably start with collection-albums.

Rolled Gold would give a nice impression of the Abkco years.
Get yer Ya-Ya's out! is the best way to listen to their abilities to make
their great songs even greater in a live setting.
Jump back is a nice compilation of the diversity they brought in the era ranging
from 1971 till 1993.

If your not interested in compilations, I would recommend to go for Now! to get
a feel of their bluesy roots, Let it bleed for their most creative studio album and
Tattoo you.

ROLLED GOLD (best collection of the 60's 'historical' material in a chronological order - a good 'study')
JUMP BACK (best collection of the post-60's material; covers 1971-1994)
EXILE ON MAIN STREET (probably their greatest album, released 1972)

I think those three will you get quite far in Stonesworld to know what's going on (but I need to say I bit hesitate with EXIlE since I think to really get the album one needs some pre-study.)

cant believe some one actually recommended A Bigger Bang....don't go anywhere near it mate, it will put you off the stones for life...as mentioned above, aim for Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Beggars Banquet, Exile on MAin St....after that, Some Girls, Tattoo You, Goats Head Soup and Black and Blue. If you liked Ladies & Gentlemen then buy Get Yer Ya ya's Out. I'm sure Rik had his tongue firmly in his cheek when he advised you.

As for boots, start with Brussels Affair...you can't go wrong from here on.

I was going to suggest Hot Rocks as the 60's compilation, but I think your choices are spot-on, Doxa. You probably couldn't have a better introduction than the three you mentioned.

The Rolling Stones
Exile On Main St.
Some Girls

First, their first truly great album, from 1968, Beggar's Banquet. Second their last really good album, from 1981, Tattoo You. Third their, perhaps, best album of all, from 1971, Sticky Fingers.

As already mentioned, if you were impressed by L&G, Get Yer Ya-Yas Out should definitely be one of the three.
Also, you can't go wrong (IMO) with Sticky Fingers.
Some Girls can also be recommended, to show a different aspect of their music.
In the medium term, you won't want to deprive yourself of Beggars' Banquet, Let it Bleed, Exile etc. etc. though!

Beggars Banquet, Sticky Fingers, Tattoo You.

Or

Let It Bleed, Exile On Main Street, Tattoo You.

Or

Sticky Fingers, Some Girls, Tattoo You

Very difficult to say. Some Girls IS a good album. Exile is a great album, as are Beggars, Bleed and Tattoo You.

However, one can not go wrong with Out Of Our Heads, Aftermath, Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Exile On Main Street, Goats Head Soup, Some Girls, Tattoo You and Undercover.
