I saw Loverboy last week at a big fair. They still have it after all these years. But Reno needs to exercise, he' s so fat. Anyone seen them this summer.

Haven't seen Loverboy in many summers. I will admit that I did love them in their's and mine formative years. Haven't seen them in many, many years. Loved them growing up. Don't listen to them much these days.

I have a couple myself:

Pixies and Dinosaur Jr...both dinosaur and Guns is more of the 90ies bands to be honest even if they did their record-debuts in the 80ies...

Never had any use for Loverboy and their ersatz Foreigner ilk. I was given a review copy of their first album and tried to use it as a Frisbee. The straight edge nearly tore a tendon in my thumb!

As for worthwhile bands from the 80's, check out...

Replacements
Husker Du
Jason and the Scorchers
The Blasters
X
Black Flag
Early REM
Minutemen

There was plenty of excellent rock 'n' roll bands in the early '80's. They just didn't get much mainstream airplay.

"likeable" and "80's rock" should never be allowed in the same sentence....

The fact that they are Canadian, won't bother most of you, but it 'reddens me' every time I hear mention of this band.

Loverboy and Survivor (Eye of the Tiger) sum up everything bad about '80's rock.

It's too bad you moved, you could of caught their free show at the Santa Cruz boardwalk. If you hurry back you might be able to catch Survivor though.

Did you know the singer from Survivor is the singer from those Bud Light "Real Men of Genius" ads?

Wasn't looking too good, but I was feeling real well.

Play it at a party when it was first released, and you'd also get a lot of laughs.
Either that, or a can of beer poured over your head and your ass kicked!

Me too - I didn't at first, but they grew on me. Now I love them.

"Only you understand the best way to carry 9 ounces of macaroni salad is in a 43-pound cooler.

Kind of interesting to see what the narrator looks like. I pictured him totally different.

Loverboy is from Vancouver. They were huge in the early 80's in Canada and the US. Not sure about Europe. Biggest songs were Turn Me Loose, Kid Is Hot Tonight and Working For The Weekend.
Drummer Matt Frenette played with Kim Mitchell for a while I think around the early 90's. I remember listening to an interview with producer Bob Rock. He was asked about all the bands he produced in Vancouver during the 80's when alot of hard rock bands recorded in Van like Bon Jovi, AC/DC, Cult, Metallica etc. He was asked about who were some of the great drummers he's heard and the first guy he mentioned was Matt!
Not sure if Loverboy has released any new material lately but they still do the Summer touring circuit. I saw them around 2001 in Vancouver when they opened for Steve Miller.

i think sometimes a band is practically advertising and announcing just how bad they are just by their name alone. can you imagine a band called loverboy being anything BUT awful?

The Replacements were the BEST band of the 80s by a mile. A great combination of punk ethos, serious chops, fantastic lyrics, and diverse musical influences. They influenced Nirvana and many others who took more of the credit. Stones fans who don't know about them? Shame on you! (Paul Westerberg also did more with open G than even Keith, who was a big influence).
