I've always loved Turd. So much so that a couple years back the band I was in we played it for about 6 months.

That has to be the longest version ever!

I remember an interview with Ronnie in the early days of his involvement. When asked if there was a song not part of the then current repertoire that he'd like to do with the Stones, he replied "Turd On The Run" and indicated that he'd really like to play that intro, in particular.

What does our own Turd think about this?

By the way, what does Turd on the Run actually mean?

It's just a made up expression for a no good shit who's on the slide and is about to get chained!

You can't polish a turd....but you can roll it in glitter.

The song has grown on me over the years. When I first heard it I was into the hits and side three of Exile was not a favorite if mine. Now I love it Turd is a great song and Let it Loose is one of the Stones best.

looks like turd gets plenty o' luv, after all....

Yes, and it warms my Exile-loving heart. EXCEPT that no love seems to come from our boys, who have never once played it live. Though I don't think I would want to hear it now with Darryl and Chuck instead of Bill and Stu.

Another Turd note: Is it possible that it's Taylor on that great rhythm guitar part? The tone and voicing sound exactly like "Shake Your Hips", and we know from the rehearsal footage that he played rhythm on that.

Sounds like Taylor to me too. I don't hear Keith at all in the song.

I would've loved to hear TOTR with full drums and not the little sticks on a road case that they did.

Great tune either way, but if the drums were as rambunctious as the Teles it would've rocked even more

doesn't it sound more like a Sun Studios cut with the trap drumkit, Rip It Up?

It is an intimate sound for sure. Were they going for that sound do you think?
Those first Elvis Sun tracks didn't even have a drum kit. Most of the rhythm is Bill Black's slap bass, but someone is hitting something with drumsticks in that original recording of "That's Alright Mama" if you ask me.

Oh well...like I said great song either way.

I think it was a Rolling Stone writer who said something like 'I have a deep desire to never again hear Turd on the Run'. He was trying to be cute but was implying that some Exile songs just weren't very good and maybe a single album would have been better. But the fact is, Turd is an excellent song.

I agree - sounds like Taylor on rhythm to me...

Its 100% Keith on the open G tuned guitar.

It's so obvious I even feel stupid in pointing it out.

How can some one even suppose it is Taylor is beyond me.

If I am wrong I'll eat all my guitars, amps and stuff and NEVER EVER open my mouth again in similar discussions!

You think Taylor would have kept the fvck up in the middle? No, that´s Keith playing. I´ve never heard Taylor sticking to a rather monotone rhythm like this throughout a song. Have you?

Opening riff is Keith's - it's got Keith all over it and it's his roots i.e, 50's Rockabilly. I love it, the lyrics are so sharp and cutting, delivered in a torrent by Jagger with wonderful harmonies. How could anyone not love it and if so for what reason. SHow me that man and I;ll prove him to be a cad, a bounder and a charlaton!

It's easy: Keith from the beginning left channel, MT from 1:00 in the centre. Just like that.

That thread inspired me to listen to that song again after quite a long time and I must say it is one of the highlights of the Exile album. In fact, yesterday evening I listened to the album from Turd on the run on and - with the exception of I just want to see his face which I find just boring and therefore always skip - I became aware of how great the second part of Exile (the former second LP of the vinyl album) actually is. It is great to listen to it loudly on a hot summer evening.

Thankys to the original poster for the thread!

Sorry, I meant steady rhythm. No doubt, that rhythm guitar being on of the finest ever recorded!

I never doubted that. Keith plays the rhythm, Taylor the licks. Simple as that.

I'm so sorry. I don't think Taylor would have wanted to keep "an obvious mistake" like this. Better?

Exile would be a perfect album if they'd left off I Just Want To See His Face. Total crap song.

Turd is excellent. I like how Ronnie said, whenever that was, some magazine, about how he'd love to play the (something similar to this) "DIIINNNOOOWWWWWNOWWWWWW" guitar bit.

i'm not sure how leaving the best song on the album off it makes it better. can't get my head around that....

Just Want To See His Face takes us to a land of mystery. A great track that just gets better through the years.
