Tumbling Dice - which version is best?

Please, give me and my cover band the following advice: Do you prefere the version on Exile on main street or Love you live? Very different tempo, I'd say.

Exile by a mile over LYL. You should also check out the Brussels 1973 live version.

The only reason some of the live 1978's versions of TB not regarded as the best ever is because of poor sound quality, however you can feel the groove of them which are the best they've played ever.

I hadn't listened to LYL for almost a million years, because I remembered it wasn't good. So I gave it another try, at least TD, and I was disagreeably surprised. This is a serious attempt to murder a good song. Incoherent noise. Of course I do prefer the Exile version by far, it's a very good one. And so are the performances during the 1972 and 1973 tours.

Here's an example from the 1972 tour. It starts from 4:18. I recommend it. Forget about the LYL version as quickly as you can.

Best version, to me, is the version from Joe Robbie Stadium, Miami, 1994. It's one of the songs they do better in recent years, than in earlier years, in my opinion. It was also very cool in Brno '07.

I always liked the groove of the 72 rehearsal ...but you can't go wrong with the 72 or 73 versions. Or as mentioned the 78 is great as well. "does anyone have a pick for Keith?"

It was good in '78! I saw them in Tucson do it with Linda Rondstadt, who had recently covered it. Linda in hot pants being chased around the stage by Mick and Ronnie. Great version, though '73 is still best.

But for your band to play it live, the best thing would be to just jam out. Try different versions and see which one you feel the best. Who knows but that you may come up with a great hybrid of your own and in any even it will be the best when you feel it the most.
Good Luck!

The one from 1978 thats on 'Handsome Girls' (its either from Detroit or Houston) which has the very long intro and is preceded by Jagger telling the crowd that 'Keith's lost his pick...'

To be honest, its the only 'warhorse' I always love hearing.

Absolutely so!smileys with beer
This has the backing vocals mixed lower, and it sounds a bit heavier - more rock´n´roll...thumbs up

Me too! I never seem to tire of the song, where I can go my whole life without hearing them play JJF or SMU again.

TD Brussels '73. If I wanted to be silly I would argue that it is the band's greatest moment on stage.

I have had the same thought myself. It all comes together on that one.

Officially? Well I've always liked the Stripped B-side. I do wish we could hear the whole song though. I do like the way they spliced it but it would be cool to hear the whole tune.

I do recall thinking the Miami Voodoo show was an excellent live version - Ronnie nailed the solo, the whole tune was on fire. They've played it pretty damn good from the Steel Wheels tour on.

Although I still can't stand Mick's 'ohhh yeah''s on Shine A Light.

The LP version is supreme though - and one of the best songs ever put to tape period.

I love the live version from Paris (backstage + show) at the Wild Horses single 1995.

Basicly there are two versions.
The "bluesy" live versions from 1972- 1982. I prefer this, the best is Knebworth for me.
The gospel feeling Tumbling Dice is on EOMS and on the 1989-2007 live versions. Not bad.

Nothing beats the studio version. Best live versions are from the 89/90 and 94/95 tours, imo. I don't like the (incredible) slow versions from the 70s.

Nothing beats '73 with Taylor. And it wasn't slow.

But I prefer '72 Ladies and Gentlemen. The "you got to roll me" part, while he looks up just kills me.

You got the Sun, You got the Moon,
and you've got
The Rolling Stones

I like the Brussels version and the L&G too.

Tumbling Dice is a typical middle tempo song, like Sway, PMS, Casino Boogie, HTW and many other very good Stones songs. Something between (fast) R&R and the ballad form. The Stones were masters of the middle tempo songs. The right tempo is important: not too slow but certainly also not too fast. A matter of groove. Even for the Stones at their best this is not an easy thing to do. Another important factor is that the song doesn't fall apart (like on LYL), but remains a coherent, tight whole. If tempo and coherency are okay you've half of a wonderful performance. Most 1972, 1973 versions of TD have the right tempo (like the 1973 Brussels version: perfect tempo and very tight), but there are a also some that are too slow or too fast (like the 1994 version up here: too fast and not tight enough). Good luck!
