Loving Cup: written by Keith? Mick? collab?
Posted by: swiss ()
Date: June 1, 2010 09:01

hi

I've always felt like the romanticism and vibe of Loving Cup was Keith. And most of the lyrics. But not sure about the "bridge" (I feel so humble with you.../etc).

What do you think (or know)?

thanks!
swiss

spill the beans w/ you all night?

to me that line alone says mick wrote the lyrics

"Well my heavy throbbers itchin' just to lay a solid rhythm down"

Thanks Marshall.

I definitely think Mick wrote some of them -- "spill the beans with you all night" good call on Mick, but that line and its variations went through a bunch of changes.

I'm the plowman from the valley - this sounds like Mick

I'm the man that brings you roses when you ain't got none - sounds like Mick: he used to bring Marianne Faithfull roses (although she didn't like roses)

You're probably right...I just can't shake the feeling that the premise is Keith.

Maybe it was just "Gimme little drink" winking smiley

thanks,
swiss

Mick came up with the word Loving and Keith came up with Cup....

As a naive french, I wonder if there isn't any metaphor in this "Loving cup"...

>> I wonder if there isn't any metaphor in this "Loving cup" <<

it's a standard/classic blues phrase

I think Mick said recently he wrote all the words on that. Notice though how the phrase "I just can't stand up - to this loving cup" appears in the alternate (Keith-sung) mix of "Soul Survivor" (and that track appears immediately after the alternate "Loving Cup" on the "Exile" bonus disc).

A Loving Cup is a kind of trophy with two handles, though the phrase is not used much anymore.

the question is ; is there a double meaning here?
Some call this song "the vagina song" there was a thread long time ago at shidoobee
about that.

yeah i know - i thought i was answering the question! :E
i wouldn't say the standard/classic blues meaning is as simple as that - but it's not about a trophy

I never took it as any innuendo.

"Gimme little drink from your loving cup" is a standard phrase among hungry babies who are breastfed. So the Glimmers had a short period of regression when they wrote this song. Has much to do with being an exile. So in the end this is a therapeutic song.

I think Keith wrote the music and Mick wrote the words.

This would sort of explain the version on the EOMS bonus disc which Keith sings. KR's vocals are mostly just guide vocals. Keith sings words that have nothing to do with sole survivor or soul survivor...

In the alternate version on the new Exile bonus disc, I'm pretty sure you can hear someone singing:

"Gimme a little drink - from your furry cup"

It's at 3:41 or so. Someone sings 'loving cup' at the same time, and the recording's a little confused, but it's there alright. Not sure if it's Mick.

I'm not going to link to Urban Dictionary or anything if you're not sure what that means - but I'm sure most get the picture.

There were probably a few furry cups kicking about as well...

The new Exile version has deffo got a variation which on my system sounds like 'hairy cup'

Generally speaking though, a loving cup is a kind of drink - to be shared.

I can't find "loving cup" in my blues dictionary.
So what is the standard/classic meaning you're talking about?

Christian, i don't mean i can provide you with a straightforward definition of its use in assorted blues;
i'm saying it's not as simple/straightforward as "vagina" (although that could be one level of meaning, sometimes)
and i don't see any reason to imagine Keith and Mick were using it in a one-dimensional way.

if you look at how it's used in assorted contexts you see for yourself that it's not that clearcut:
make sure you fill the loving cup ~ everyone wants to fill their loving cup ~
we drank together from the loving cup ~ you fill my cup - and so on

But it was written well before the Exile period. They performed the song at the Hyde
park show on july 5th in 1969.

Why telling this everybody? I thought only you and me knew this. Is it so nice to make a fool of me?

An early version of this song, with a completely different piano intro, was recorded between April and July 1969 at Olympic Sound Studios in London, during the Let It Bleed album sessions.
