OT: JET (the rock band from Melbourne )
Posted by: SwayStones ()
Date: March 18, 2010 11:31

Hi !

Yesterday I heard a song that I liked a lot "Are you gonna be my girl" from the Australian rock band Jet .
As far as I know, they aren't famous in Europe .
What about the States and Australia ?
Do you like their music ?Which one from their three album would you recommend me ?

I am a Frenchie ,as Mick affectionately called them in the Old Grey Whistle Test in 1977 .

Jet rocks!

I have their first CD, but I haven't heard much from them since.

BTW, I saw them in my town a few years ago at one of those MTV $2 TV show filmings.
Allen Toussaint joined the band for one or two songs.

Jet supported The Stones at the O2 Arena in 2007

Yes, unfortunately. That bloody 'Are you gonna be my girl' has been used to death in ads/ TV show previews. (In the UK that is - don't know about the rest of Europe).

They opened for the Stones at several European shows in 2007. One of the 02 shows, as mentioned above, plus the Lisbon & Madrid shows I was at.

Their first album is fantastic! If you like AC/DC, you'll love that album. It rocks start to finish. Their second effort was very disappointing, IMO......so much so that I didn't even pick up the 3rd album, but that debut album is a solid effort!!

A summary of JET? Middle-of-the-road 'pub rock' They had a couple of hit records here in the UK - Are You Gonna Be My Girl and Rollover DJ' - and were the darlings of the NME for 5 minutes, circa 2003/2004.

They made waves at a time when guitars and leather jackets were 'in' - I'm thinking The Strokes, Datsuns, Vines, et al - but I don't think they'd get much of a look-in now. They released a studio LP a few months ago to little acclaim.

They get quite a bit of radio play here in the states. First album had several songs, that received some airplay. Not so much from the 2nd (except for a few beer/car commercials). 3rd one has a song with limited airplay (sounded like 'My Sharona' to me!).

Wide range of music on their CD's, a bit of a 70's throwback. Some of the ballads remind me of Badfinger.

You should....they lay down some solid stuff in the 3rd album that feels like the first album again. They admitted how the 2nd album was very "out there."

Saw them opening for the stones in Madrid and El Ejido. Intersting music for having a little bit of fun, but the singer behaved like an idiot, and two songs were enough. That is my opinion, shared by some part of the crowd (first rows), who booed a lot.

And they shamelessly nicked Lust for Life from Iggy. I know everyone borrows, but that one is just way too similar....

I have seen Jet twice, first one at The Wiltern, 2004, good band in small theatres and I believe in 2007 warming up for the Stones in Madrid, totally dissapointed, bad live music, all the time screaming and very bad.
I like their first album, next ones what can I say.
Famous in Europe? well over here in Spain, yes, but like other bands, since their first album, nada de nada
Carlitos
Tenerife

Opened for the Stones on the Licks tour in Aus before they had a record out. Story goes that they were chosen by Keith after the Aussie promoter sent him some CDs of potential opening acts. Supported Greenday on their tour here in Dec. Still pretty big in Aus. 1st album - great; 2nd - pretty crap except for about 4 songs, don't know about the 3rd

Re: OT: JET (the rock band from Melbourne )

That song was a big hit. That album rocked pretty well; eventhough it came on the umpteenth rock-revival's coat tails. next Jet album - not nearly as good.

loved the first record, very good production too.
the second one was not as good, also not as good production.
didn´t even know so far they have a third one out.

their career shows that rock music is out at the moment and maybe forever.
if jet doesn´t make it on a big scale who will???

Wolfmother was a HUGE disappoint to me.......loved that first single they had, but the rest of the first album was an utter letdown. So glad a friend of mine burned me a copy and I didn't waste money on it.......

Now what about Starsailor? Just heard them for the first time on Serve3, the Hard Rock Cafe album doing a cover of a Graham Nash song, and they sound like something I could get into. Loathe the Charlatans song on there and am reminded of how much I hated them opening for the Stones.....
