I can't believe no one has mentioned that great compilation of 60's Rock Steady: "Duke Reid's Treasure Chest"

Check out the samples on Amazon; I'd put it up there with "The Harder They Come" and the "Rockers" soundtracks.

Other favourite albums:

Burning Spear - Marcus Garvey
Bunny Wailer - Sings the Wailers
Peter Tosh - Equal Rights
Linton Kwesi Johnson - Making History
Bob Marley - Songs of Freedom
Freddie McGregor - Bobby Bobylon

Two great tunes from a great album, from the great group Culture...featuring the late, great Joseph Hill.

Rockman: Those 2 are truly great!

So are these:

Junior Delgado - Original Guerilla Music
Pablo Moses - Revolutionary Dream
Hugh Mundell - Africa Must be Free by 1983
Dub Specialist - Dub Store Special
Ras Midas - Rain and Fire

Love the Hugh Mundell album. Again, another artist who hardly gets a mention anymore.

Incredible singer. Really haunting voice. Shot dead in 1983.

Do you guys listen to any of the recentr roots artists?, i particularly like Chezidek. Other good records are by Lutan Fyah,Fantan Mojah,Queen Ifrica and Mavado. Mavado's made some stupid homophobic songs but has also written some of the best ghetto numbers of recent years. If you dig the classic roots you might like some of these artists

Just a word of advice: Play it LOUD!

Most people play reggae as some kinda relaxing background noise. It sounds awesome loud.

< I'm Keith Richards and I approve this tip. smoking smiley

I second that. I also think it sounds best on vinyl, especially the 70s stuff. The Blood & Fire label did a great job with their CD releases (they've sadly gone out of business) and Pressure Sounds releases sound brilliant.

Sorry to answer that late, yes Mavado´s tunes I listened to (you´re right
with your specific remark, others are concerned as well.....but that´s just another topic ).

Have you listened to Garnett Silk,humanriff77 ?
Wonderful voice with top class producers in the early nineties, what a tragedy he
had to go that early........

This one´s produced by Steelie and Clevie....

Nice one Bab...errr...Bro?...uhhh... Back Of My Palm! I've never heard that one either.
Part of the thrill of listening to and collecting reggae is to discover SO many rarities.

The Maytones deserve a place on this favorites list! Not widely known now, but huge back in the day
