Oh my god, that gave me goose bumps. So happy to see Mick doing what he does best, and still as great as always. I must say it looks as if he stole the show from U2 even during their own song. Hope I'm not premature when I say The Stones are ready to roll !!!

well,we havent heard Keith play yet and Ronnie's done one brief performance which has only circulated as an audience cellphone clip on you tube, so I would say it IS a bit premature.

Mick is an incredible physical specimen, so the rumors of a 2010 tour may not be far off the mark. The Stones will NOT go away quietly, and Mick's health is the key. Ronnie has been active, and Charlie keeps up his chops. As for Keith, well, only HE knows if he can still do it. I think that the shocking truth will be a resounding YES.

A fantastic night all round with hardly a minute wasted throughout the entire four-hours-plus show, and with the exception of the U2/Springsteen/Patti Smith "Because the Night" @#$%&-up, which had to be performed a second time due to an entire catalogue of errors, everything ran as smooth as clockwork with some incredibly stunning performances.

Following a regal, though somewhat subdued solo performance from the Killer, Aretha Franklin's set served us a timely reminder of how sweet and beautiful this lady can still deliver a song. Respect went down well with the crowd, as did some her of her comments about how great it was for her to be in New York. She said playfully, that she was going home, "loaded down with bags of shopping".

Jeff Beck's set was the evening's first venture into hard rock, although it was perhaps Sting's "People Get Ready" that actually brought out the best in him. That said, "A Day In The Life" was absolutely fantastic, to the point of making his forthcoming gigs with Clapton as must-see events for the near future. I'd forgotten just how good he was/is having heard so much dross over recent years from other so-called guitarists.

The biggest surprise of the night was Metallica, who delivered a truly stunning head-banging volley to the ecstatic audience, many of whom, had come along especially to see these guys. They were rewarded, not only with the best sound of the night (by far), but additionally, with some incredible duets with Lou Reed, Ray Davies and Ozzy Osbourne. "Sweet Jane" was simply breathtaking.

By contrast to Metallica's crisp, loud, blistering volume, U2's sound was surprisingly poor. I say surprisingly, because having seen them on their recent tour, they had a sound system to kill for. Bereft of such sonic benefits to their delivery, their performance was flat and at times almost lifeless, exposing the limitations of their guitar sound that many of their harshest critics have often lambasted them for. Springsteen's appearance with Patti Smith was a train-wreck from start to finish with the latter clearly unable to hear anything that was going on around her. It needed a second take, and of course it gone one, though without Nils Lofgren's guitar work, it was memorable more as a nostalgia piece than anything else. "Still Haven't Found" was superb however, and Bruce interacted superbly with Bono and the Edge.

Jagger's appearance (from the right side of the stage as you looked on), was actually a surprise to many in the audience, though this might have been because the opening chords of "Gimme Shelter" had already began to ring around the arena. It was a wonderful rock n' roll moment, seeing Mick appear in such a setting, to such a classic song, that it really DID take the breath away. I thought Mick and Fergie's delivery was absolutely stunning, as was the rendition of "Stuck In A Moment", one of U2's more soulful renditions of late.

It would, of course, be unfair to criticise U2 for their sound, especially when they provided such a great "house band" for guests as distinguished as Jagger and Springsteen, so it was quite fitting that the final performance of the night was a superb rendition of "Beautiful Day'; so apt for what was a truly wonderful and uplifting evening.

Hats off too, to the wonderful New York crowd and their generous appreciation of the artists and everything they stand for.

The city that never sleeps....I now know what they mean!

It truly was a privilege to be here on a night as wonderful as this.

Have a good one.

Cheers,

Nice job by the Metallica boys there. Considering they played Sweet Jane at about a quarter speed of their usual style. But they seemed to actually wake up Lou about halfway through and he attempted to sing for a change instead of talking his way through a song. The Ray Davies set was much better. Ray looked like really enjoyed having a lively band behind him. Best All Day and All of the Night I've seen in years.
