Can someone come up with shows/sellouts for A Bigger Bang compared to 360? If that is how it's gonna be judged, might as well have the numbers.

If U2 is only after having the highest grossing tour they can easily do it with the current tour or the many ones to likely come in the future. If they don't break the record with the scheduled gigs they simply append a few more. The Stones might have one more chance to top the grossing charts, but I highly doubt it. They oversaturated the market for decades. Had the ticket prices during the Steel Wheels, Voodo Lounge or maybe B2B tour been what they are now then those would have shattered the Bigger Bang record easily.
In any case, U2 will in the end be on top of the charts, be it with the 360 tour or one to come. I personally don't like this idea, but let's get used to it.
It hurts a bit, because - compared to album sales and all the other statistics - the touring business was a thing where the Stones really were in their own league, pretty much untouchable.

Records put aside, even U2 acknowledge that the Stones are the greatest.
They also know that in the end of the day, no matter how many 90.000 seaters they fill, the Stones are musicial legends and they are not.

Exactly - couldn't be said better.

U2 are not musical legends? is that a joke?

There is another way to look at it:

U2 is now in the same league as the Stones - horrible record sales, incredible attendance figures.

I'm curious as to the amount of shows. It seems that U2 have done quite a lesser amount of shows then the Stones did for Bang so far, as well as not overplayed a market (Chicago comes to mind). And I don't see U2 doing as many shows as there were for Bang. To my knowledge, not all of the U2 US shows have sold out. As well with the Stones. The U2 shows have more seating available - the Stones, well, they had plenty of seats available.

So is the jeopardy for the record for this year or for a tour total? It sounds like it's for just this year alone. The Stones record was for the grand total, which took a long time. U2 finishing their tour in October and then doing nothing until half way through next year - that's not exactly the same tour now is it.

Then we'll have the recurring debate: What really makes for a successful tour? The size of the stack of bucks generated or the actual volume of seats filled.
What makes a succesful tour is a band that goes out and puts on great shows night after night. Whether they play for 1 fan or a million. The music is what makes a succesful tour.

Will U2 360 tour outgross bigger bang??

Does it matter?
Do we care?

it isnt really a valid comparisen comparing 2 bands who are at different stages of thier respective careers and obviously one of those bands has an advantage in that they are nearly 20 years younger so could theoretically do concerts 20 years after the stones last.

and then you have to consider inflation in that 20 year period which would make any band have a larger gross income than any tour today.

you would have to take inflation into consideration for every tours figures.

the only way to compare is attendance figures for each tour.

4 million copies sold from their latest album is pretty good these days, and they are good sellers during the Christmas season and of course they will get a couple of grammy's too, so more album sales until February/March 2010. I can see their album around the 6 million mark at the end.

At least U2 has the guts to play 70-80% of their new album and even more, they start the show with 4 new songs.
I don't see the Stones do that in their lifetimes anymore because unfortunatly they can't produce a new good album........... that's Sad Sad Sad.

Agree with half of your post, but in my opinion U2's new album is OK, but not a good album.

Depends on music taste - if you like softer music, then U2 is ok. If you don't like softer music / pop - then it is Stones. To me ABB is way better.
Probably the same with Beatles vs. Stones etc.

So U2 are supposedly doing some green thing (sort of like those more expensive light bulbs that last longer but are loaded with mercury? That's green!) with this tour but it's probably just all moot point bullshit, especially when you get up to however many cars like that concentrated in one area.

What are the numbers for AC/DC?

That is the best tour this year IMHO. Unlike Bono and U2, they don't need 200+ trucks to haul their ego around. U2 can't touch their CD sales either.

at least they dont have so many empty seats that they need to lay out tarps to cover up the holes like the stones did

Paris Stade de France 2007 for example. The last U2 stade de france show was SOLD OUT.

They're going to set a record the Stones will only be able to beat if they announce its their final tour which I don't see them doing...

Frankly I think U2's tour is sheer idiocy... U2 has yet to turn a profit because all that money is going to pay for the claws and the 100s of trucks needed to haul them around ... And all this to presumably get close to fans in stadiums? Give me a break..
