Can Keith play Drums?
Posted by: Roll73 ()
Date: September 24, 2009 17:13

Ronnie has been known to 'smash the skins' now and then and I'm sure I've seen photos/ heard of Mick having a go.

You'd have thought, what with Keith being the rhythm-meister that he is/ was that he'd make a mean drummer himself.

I know he was honoured with his own drum by the Wingless Angels, but I'm talking about the full kit.

Can anyone shed any light?

An excellent bassplayer, no I don't think so - LOL. Yes, he played a few very guitar-oriented bass lines on some songs. But that doesn't make him a great bass player.

Regarding the drums, I remember reading somewhere that he tried it, but just didn't have the coordination to be able to play it.

Yep, never heard of it, though if he tried drums it could not be worse than his recent guitar playing! (ok sorry, I'll quite being mean).

But yeah, he's not too shabby on piano, and I actually like his bass playing. If I recall, and interviewer asked Bill what he thought of Keith and Ronnie's bass playing and I think he said Ronnie 'had some nice ideas' but kind of stated he didn't care for Keith's bass playing (sorry I cannot remember the exact quote).

On the other hand, I have heard Mick is a fairly capable drummer, even laying down all of the rough tracks for A Bigger Bang himself before they brought in Charlie to dub over them.

he gets the job done on bass, imo. I didn't say great bass player, that would be overstating it.

Agreed - just curious then how you rank 'excellent' compared to 'great'?

He does a really good if not excellent job playing bass with Lennon, Clapton and Mitchell, in the Dirty Mac, on the r&r circus.

Cheetah Chrome (fmr lead guitarist of the Dead Boys) is a neighbor of mine and a friend. Back in his junk days he used to hang out with Anita doing the nod. Keith would come visit and was always up for a jam. He recalls a jam where Keith was on drums since no real drummer was around, and, according to Cheetah, Keith was quite terrible on the drums.

Hi Koen--
I really enjoy Keith's bass playing, it's excellent, within the Stones, is how I should have said ...I especially love 'Live With Me', anybody who can conceive and play that line gets 'excellent' in my book.
Great- that goes for so many bassists, but you'd sure have put Mc Cartney in that list, along with Entwistle, Dunn, Carol Kaye, Jamerson
ah you probably know 'em as well as I do..

Actually, I don't know who Dunn, Kaye or Jamerson are cool smiley

Entwistle I never liked, way too busy and an ugly sound (IMHO). I prefer bass players who are more in the background, and add to the rhythm and groove of a song (Wyman of course being a great/excellent example).

Donald 'Duck' Dunn- bass player for Booker t & the MGs, and hundreds of Stax sessions, also toured with Neil Young, Clapton, others- your statement/preference, which I completely agree with, really applies to him

Carol Kaye plaed with everyone, yes everyone. Especially in the 60's in the studio. She was like the Jimmy Page of bass players. I beleive she is the bassist on Good Vibrations.
You've seen the movie The Blues Brothers right? That's Donald Duck Dunn on bass.

Keith does not play drums, but in my opinion he is a fine bassist. Don't forget that he was the bassist in the studio version of "Sympathy for the Devil", as well as on "Happy", "Before They Make Me Run", "Casino Boogie", "Brand New Car" and a few others.

Remember seeing video-footage from Steel Wheels, Voodoo and Bridges sessions with Keith on various percussive instruments.

I'm quite sure about the Bridges session anyway.

That's a great bit of info. Thanks F4TL. I'd love to hear a recording of that jam.
