Is there anyway they could "mature" and arrange this song to play it now?

This one sounds a bit like Memo From Turner - what a difference of style

Even Plant and Krauss play it too much like 1963. The chord structure is great and timeless but the guitar sounds and the backing vocals are always the old ones.
Btw, Plant and Krauss missed the chance to stage the song! Her as the Fortune Teller and him as the one to fall in love with her...

Cool song - reminds me of "Love Potion #9". Are both by the Searchers?

The Merseybeats had it as a B-Side during the mid-sixties and it was better than anything mentioned above.

This was written by Allen Toussaint, who is a great songwriter and member of teh Rock N Roll Hall of Fame, and is still performing and toruing and collaborating. One of the true GENTLEMEN in the music world.

He also wrote songs that became hits for both the Staples and Devo, yes Devo (Workin In a Coal Mine), Warren Zevon (A Certain Girl), Pointer Sisters, Boz Skaggs and hosts of others. He and Elvis Costello put collaborated on a great record, and toured together (a great tour I was fortunate enough to see). How many songwriters have had both the Who and the Stones cover their songs?

Fortune Teller has been HEAVILY covered and done as jazz, blues and near-metal (see The Who circa 1968-71 absolutely rocking the song. Mick and keef could arrange almost any song to fit the band....Charlie would be smiling thru it, and we'd all love hearing it.

I don't see them doing this one or Love Potion #9 again live, but they are really in the same family as Tell Me and It's All Over Now, which, to me, will always rock.

This is definitely something they could do on the B-Stage. As they did Route 66.

IORR............but I like it!

another perfect 10 out of 10, brilliantly executed, it puts other versions like the whos to shame... but it would be horrible vegas-style, please leave it alone.

I wanna hear EMPTY HEART live, that one rocks. Listen to MIDDLE OF THE ROAD by the Pretenders, C.H. Stole it, still works 110% live. There's one new one to bring back for the 2010 Tour.....

Would have loved to have seen that! Which songs did they perform? I have been trying to get the CD/DVD combo of them working together - so far, no luck smileys with beer

...and that version by Plant and Krauss is killer

Also love Fortune Teller, would love to hear Stones do it live;
someone mentioned 'Working In A Coal Mine": Lee Dorsey had a great version of that in the late 60's.

Hey mofur:

They did the River In Reverse record, along with a bunch of Toussaint songs like 'A Certain Girl', some New Orleans piano classics, and songs from throughout the Attractions career, as the band was the Attractions, with the addition of Toussaint on piano and vocal, plus Toussaint's guitarist and horn section.

They did some songs like 'I Don't Wanna Go to Chelsea' true to the original recording, and others like 'Watching the Detectives' taking on a jazz vibe.

One of the best shows I have ever seen. The whole band was having a great time, interacting and improvising throughout. I hope they tour again soon.

I think the best way is to give examples

"Tell me (you're coming back to me)" is genuinely a naive (innocent) song

Naive may also refer to the rendering of a song: in this case, I find naive Fortune Teller as played on Got live if you want it

I would say also that the rendering of Under the Boardwalk by the Stones is naive

On ya ya's, I find also that the rendering of Carol is quite fresh and a little bit naïve;

By contrast, Little Queenie, another Berry songs sounds nasty and mean –it stands as the antithesis of "naïve"

Quoting Lester Bangs in Rolling Stone on Little Queenie:

"Just strutting along leering and shuffling, the song has the loose, lip-smacking glee its lyrics ever implied. This kind of gutty, almost offhand, seemingly effortless funk is where the Stones have traditionally left all their competitors in the dust" –

I like "Fortune Teller" too but more in the way of it being evocative of the time it was recorded, specifically the sounds of the time it was recorded.

Fortune Teller may be too much, but I wouldn't mind them picking up a song like Poison Ivy again winking smiley
