this is the Crowes-album I've been waiting for since By Your Side: effortless, natural-sounding music played as if it just happened in the moment. It's maybe best described as stoned country rock with excursions to Faces swagger followed by Stones-disco rock, and a Candy Store Rock-zeppelinisque groove. I mention these influences just to give some idea of what to expect, for me the rhythmic approach, lyrics and combination of Rich's and Luther's guitars make this utterly Black Crowes. 11 tracks on the album proper, nine more to download for free from their home page.

that's right, but records always find their way to stores before "official" release dates. several on-line shops have shipped this album last Thursday, if not earlier, and some stores have been selling it as well, including Keltainen Jäänsärkijä in Helsinki (next to Tavastia Club) where I bought it on Saturday for 16,50 euros. I downloaded the complimentary album Until The Freeze... today using the code on the plastic "credit card" included in the vinyl replica-style CD-sleeve. Also included is a "Cabin Fever"-sticker.
My only complaint is that it's damn hard to read the handwritten lyrics and sleevenotes on the tiny CD-covers!

PS. the "credit card" features a snowy landscape, and while it fits ...Until The Freeze title, I can't help but wonder if it's a coke joke...

BOTH CD's are great...I've listened to them over and over on the way to work and home...they are recorded live in Levon Helm's barn in Woodstock...Luther Dickenson SMOKES throughout!

From a first listening that opener really can't hide it was recorded at Levon Helms' !

Just bought BEFORE THE FROST..

now trying to download UNTIL THE FREEZE. I went to the site and
entered the code & (optional) email address... and clicked "submit"... got nothing?

Anybody have trouble? Is it possible it won't activate download until original relase date of Sept 1?

Dude. Download it off nowtorrents or vuze. Its there already. Started this thread the other day

with Until the Freeze it's 20 tracks and it's all good which can't be said of the much shorter BYS, Lions and Warpaint albums. UTF gets really heavy (and I don't mean metal!).
Both albums combined is akin to supercharging the first Manassas-album, true Cosmic American Music if there was such a thing. (that should give you an idea how happy I'm with this new Black Crowes music ><)

OK..i got the UNTIL THE FREEZE download (mp3 & flac). Worked on Firefox but not Safari (for me).

I didn't want to listen to any of it until I could hear both "BEFORE" & "UNTIL"....sounds excellent so far.

The Black Crowes..on a Stones site should be considered ON TOPIC not OFF TOPIC.

After listening to Before the Frost, I thought it was good, no masterpiece but very good.. But after hearing Until the Freeze I was blown away, together they compliment each other perfectly. Interesting way to put this tracklisting together. Reminds me of Exile with the acoustic sides and blues songs bunched together.

Both records are awesome!!

Got my copy yesterday and yes, it's one of their best. There's a, wait foor it, disco like rock track that doesn't seem to far from Miss You; there's a long Grateful Dead like track; and of course you can hear The Stones and The Faces all over the place. Stronger songs this time. Haven't heard the download yet though.

I felt WARPAINT suggested that an album like BEFORE THE FROST ... was on the way. I can't believe I'm saying this after all these years, but I'm downright excited about the Black Crowes future output. I give all the credit to Luther Dickinson, he really knocked something loose in those Robinson boys, especially Rich.
