I've always loved the Black Crowes, but perhaps it's because I got married, had kids, have a billion other things going on, but I just don't know their songs as well as I used to (titles and what not) with their older stuff. I'm still very excited to finally be seeing them this Friday. I just fear there'll be too much of the unfamiliar, though I'm listening to nothing but them this week!!

does a song have to be familiar to enjoy it?

No. Just good. Hence the problem with the Black Crowes.

I went to the show last night. Interesting show. At one point the band stopped playing mid song because of a fight in the crowd. Chris Robinson spent a solid ten minutes chastising the security for throwing out people smoking weed, but allowing people to fight. I've never seen something like it. The band was literally ready to jump off the stage into the crowd to break up the fight. I caught it all on video. Will post on youtube soon and post the link.

Just got the "Before the Frost..." today - listening as I write. Only three songs into it - but it does sound promising thumbs up

I think in some regards, yes it does. It'd be like going to a concert of an artist I don't know anything about and sitting through the whole show...

OK so I saw them this past Friday, and I have to say, standing in the 5th of a GA audience............................THEY BLEW MY FIN MIND!!! I could so easily stop following the Stones and start following them and it'd be at a fraction of the cost, too! They reminded me of a young Stones, circa 1972, with a young super talented guitarist. Fin incredible show!!!! I came very close to catching a drumstick, but ultimately it was the guy standing next to me. Not at all disappointed, and I'll definitely go see them again - at $35 how can you not?!?!?!?!

I saw the Crowes last week play in Bridgeport, CT and they were amazing. They sounded great and played lots of new songs and the crowd loved it. Their attitudes toward the set list is a breath of fresh air, in back to back shows they managed to play completely different new tunes and opened and closed with new songs.

Much like when Keith takes the mic for his songs, when Rich Robinson did his song many people headed for the bathrooms, which is a shame cause sang and played very well.

Download the free Media Monkey player. You can play any type of file and burn to CD for playback on any player with no decoding necessary. Just go to mediamonkey.com

For those of you that are really dedicated to The Black Crowes, could one of you please answer me this question?

I'm just learning of their Live Nation instant live albums and I want to start getting them. My question is do they change the cover for each tour, or is it just a random change thru out the same tour? There seems to be 3 different covers, and the dates are spread out some, so I was wondering if they do it similarly to The Who or not, because while some of the dates are spread out, there doesn't appear to be that much of a spread to make it more than 2 tours, if you follow. I'm just really wondering how many of these are out there that may not be on Live Nation's website anymore.

thanks!
VL

Wisertime, thanks so very much for that info! Much obliged. That's a great starting point and reference for me. Is there also a list for all of their 2007-present releases as well? I was on their website earlier today and see that a lot of the 2008 shows are available, allbeit far more expensive than the price I've found a lot of the older ones for now.

thanks again!

I've now listened to both CD's and they are.....GRRRREAT!!! Fantastic....the only good thing I've heard all year...I think

...but still, they "stole" that sound from somewhere, now, if I could only remember wherefrom? ;-)

It really is a fantastic album. I liked it well enough the first time thru (just got Until the Freeze on Monday night finally!), but, as many of you have pointed out, with each additional listen, the album gets better and better and better! It's really an incredible album. Soooooooo much better than Warpaint, IMO, and Appaloosa has already joined the ranks of my all-time favorite Crowes songs.

Wisertime,
Yet again, thank you soooo much for all of this!! Was it really all listed like this on their website? Apparently I wasn't looking in the right spot then. I just kept clicking on different shows to see if an actual album existed or just the digital download...I'm assuming all these are albums only? Or do they include the digital downloads as well? Several of the shows on their site are digital only, perhaps at one time they were available as CD versions?
thanks again,
VL

Great record, much better than Warpaint. Bought the double album yesterday.
The songs are great. The vinyl sounds very good too, which isn't always the case with new records. To my ears it is better sounding than the last Dylan for example (which wasn't a bad sounding record to begin with)

Anyway, the songs and feeling of the record is great, maybe the best record from the Crowes in years.

It's a list I made and that I keep updated. Both digital downloads and CDs are available (MP3 : 9.95$ or FLAC : 14.95$ / CDs : 23$).

I bought this last week, mainly from the recomendations on here.
It's the first ''studio '' album by them since Amorica, which I thought a bit tepid after the 2 earlier Albums Shake Your Money' and Southern Harmobny',I did get LIVE in a closing down sale somewhere, can't say I was that impressed.
So it was with some reservation that I bought this one, must say it's a bit of a grower, they seem to have lost some swagger somewhere along the way though, I agree with some of the comments about Stones Disco could be Miss You part 2.
I have listened to the Untill The Freze download a few more times and it is very Counrty orientated, mainly to check that the downloads worked fine , and they do seem very well presented.
Thanks for the advice all of you.
Finally a couple of questions to any of you that are more familiar with the current Crowes,
Was this album recorded over more than one night, as the instramentation is surely different on the downloaded side .
The other thing I am curious about is the Live Black Crowes site, it offers live shows in MP3 or Flac and does explain to novices like me the actual differences, so why do they not offer the Until The Freeze part of Before the Frost in MP3 or Flac.

Did you mean to say that this is the first album since Amorica that you'd bought of theirs? Because they've certainly had other albums since then - Three Snakes and One Charm; By Your Side; Lions; and Warpaint. If one is strictly a fan of the original Crowes (Shake Your Moneymaker), then anything latter day is not going to be for that person. The Crowes, like the Stones, have really evolved over time, and I truly feel that they are just reaching their peak. It'll be interesting to see where they go from here and how long Luther remains in the band.

One thing I would like to say is that Rich Robinson seemed very uncaring and uninvolved in the concert I attended. He seemed to have a permanent scowl on his face and everytime Luther started a solo, you could almost see on his face a look oh here we go again. I wonder how much of the turmoil has been created over the years from Rich's perhaps jealousy of the other guitarists? He does play a great rhythm guitar and even when he solos, he's a fine enough guitarist. He just looked like he'd rather have been anywhere else. Off to the side, hardly interacting with the rest of the band all night - is that his typical modus operandi?

I can't wait to get home today and put Before the Frost... in its proper playing order from the 2-LP version. Looking forward to seeing how the album sounds the way it was intended to be heard. There are some of the best tunes they've ever done on this album. And Luther really has been a tremendous addition to them. He truly reminds me of Mick Taylor.
