Charlie Watts photos

On Sunday I took the Torbay Express from Bristol to Kingswear and then as there is little to do in Kingswear, I took the ferry across to Dartmouth. We were a bit peckish by then, so we took a seat at the back of a fish and chip restaurant. After a few minutes, another party occupied the table opposite where I was sitting. "He's the spitting image of Charlie Watts" I thought. After conspiratorial conversations amongst the party that I was with and a couple on a neighbouring table we decided that it really was him. It helped that the chap he was with started talking about one of his gigs in Cardiff. I grabbed a sneaky backup photo whilst he wasn't looking, then as we were leaving I summoned the courage to ask him if I could take a photo. He was extremely charming and happily agreed. I bumped into him later on and spoke a few words at Exeter station where Tornado was taking a 50 minute water stop. It seems he was on board too.

I was actually thinking that he looks really very good. In that top pic - the main one, he looks like what he is. The drummer of the Stones must have seen some sh*t.

Oh, I think he looks very good for someone in his late 60's. I am a huge Charlie fan.

Charlie's looking good tonight, ain't he?
The first time I thought a Stone looked REALLY old was when I saw Ronnie promoting his book on Jools Holland, he looked even more frail than this:

Charlie is sartorial elegance and the perfect gentleman, not to mention infinitely versatile in more ways than one - like he goes from spending 500,000 euros on a horse last week to a fish and chip restaurant this week. I doubt you'd ever catch Mick in one of those.....

Sorry but there are some dumb comments about his appearance - he's pushing 70, for Christ's sake!!

If you go to a Stones show at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas you will see the best dressed Stones crowd ever. According to Mick. He said so at one of the shows. Very dressed up crowd. Funny enough, I was in a suit and tie myself at that show, because I had it in my luggage for a business meeting on the same travel. Stones tie that is.

Sure Charlie looks great, and sure fans look great too, but every event has it's own dressing code. Like red socks in Boston. Charlie is ruling when he is dressing!

beautiful photo & cool anecdote - Charlie looks wonderful ... just like a Rolling Stone
[passing the popcorn to the glamorous Beast, who knows what she's talking about]

ps: for the historical record: the site Voja copied that from indicates that the shots/anecdote were posted in mid-july.

and it really would be a lot cooler if Voja would edit his/her first post to make it clear right away
that s/he's not the one who took the photos - thanks!

Great story and photos, Voja. How appropriate that Charlie should be on board Tornado - a classy way to travel in the style of the bygone age of the steam train. (For anyone interested, the last steam train ran in the UK in 1966 until a group of enthusiasts managed to raise 3 million pounds to build Tornado which was completed in 2008)

Thanks Voja: nice pictures and a nice story. I wouldn't have guessed Charlie was a steam fan, but it fits.

Just been watching this footage of Tornado/Torbay Express with some of the instrumental mixes from Voodoo Stew (Love Is Strong/Sparks Will Fly/You Got Me Rocking) playing in the headphones: there are lots of trains in the Stones' music and the latter-day Stones remind me of one of those magnificent old machines (not Tornado of course, which is a brand new engine to an old design) still out at work thrilling all and sundry. If you've ever travelled behind a steam train you'll know that those engines are stars...
