I doubt they'll be playing to 90,000+ audiences in the States.

Impressive, as you say, nonetheless.

The numbers per city is for two shows so they got 93272 per show.

Just out of curiousity, how much were the average ticket prices for the stones shows in Europe during the ABB tour?

Cheers,
Wuudy

I saw them in Paris, and it was worth it but mostly because of the stage set-up - 50 m. high andpretty awesome display of lights, smoke, etc. The setlist was too focused on new stuff, and there was a bunch of filler moments where they weren't playing. Also just a hair over two hours, and I had seen Springsteen play the week before for almost 3 with no filler.

I love this: "The setlist was too focused on new stuff".

Wow - what a fantastic idea, to tour a NEW record and play NEW songs.

me too, i don't expect that a group is playing new stuff on a
tour behind the record, but, maybe it's because i'm a stones fan winking smiley

yeah, I hear you kait and skipstone - good for people who like the new stuff, but I haven't liked the last 2 cd's so just my opinion. Also, leading off the concert with 4 new songs and closing the whole show with one is too much - almost arrogant on Bono's part but who would ever accuse him of that?

sorry UGot2Rollme, there was no offense against your post,

I love the new U2 CD but live I hardly worked for me in Paris I must say, except for Caller Unknown
But they have guts for sure to play so many songs of their album for sure

Whereas Bruce I prefer to see live instead of on CD....

Amazing how Stones fans continue to be so thin-skinned towards and intimidated by the likes of U2 and Springsteen.

Why? Because, in addition to selling insane numbers of tickets live, they still put out somewhat worthwhile new music on a somewhat regular basis?

Blame the Stones for their inertia, don't blame U2 and Springsteen for still being hungry.

Re: OT: Impressive U2 tour boxscores

Whether or not you or anyone else doesn't like U2's new album, they are promoting it, they are playing a lot of songs from it. And they still play their warhorses.

I don't see what's so arrogant about their set list. That's like complaining that a new dresser is not as nice as a nice old dresser - the old dresser was new once. Unlike the Stones on their last tour - and the amount of ABB songs played total throughout the tour doesn't count, there needs to be consistency - U2 is supporting their new record by playing a bevy of songs from it. If you went to the show knowing this and were disappointed then I guess you should not have gone. Because everyone knows they're gonna play most of the new album.

I do not know the source of these numbers, but impressive. Just like to know how you can book an 93,000 audience in a Stadium where the maximum authorised by the State Dpt is 80,000. The average price $ 108.90 which can be translated at € 78 which seems correct. Now, the USD devalued approximately of 12 % as compared to now with the Euro. So if we estimate the gross from ABB to be 40%, we can restate ABB to 585 Millions US$. Which make up an average price of 130 US$.

Source for the numbers is Billboard magazine Boxscores. These are huge numbers and just shows how having a stage setup in the middle of the field helps since you can utilize every seat in the stadium as well as the whole field.

You got it one. Stones fans on here still even manage to get thin-skinned at the mention of a certain band from Liverpool, some 40 years after their demise for goodness sake.

The worst kind of penis envy imaginable.

80,000 yes, for football or rugby.
But 93,000 is for all the seats (it's a 360° show) and the people on the field.

30,000 more people than the Stones/2006 and 40,000 more than the Stones/2007.

They ARE indeed the greatest rock n roll band ever - but the reasons for it have got absolutely @#$%& all to do with the info you've just posted.

Hello Gazza, I agree with you. I just posted this information because I don´t see what is so impressive or new in this thread. The Stones are the best band because they play the best music. I would love see a Stones tour in clubs for little audiences for exemple.
The Stones are the best band because they wrote JJF, IORR, Start me Up, Gimme Shelter, YCAGWYW, HTW, etc, etc, etc.... and because they are amazing on the stage (big stages or little stages).

All the best. Regards from Brazil.

I dont care if its U2, The Rolling Stones, Bon Jovi or Britney Spears.

Nothing wrong with acknowledging someone's ability to sell a lot of tickets, even if you dont care for their music.

In that respect, those figures are pretty impressive - especially during a world wide recession and where the average ticket price is in the $100 range.

Quite why it gets up people's noses so much that any other act can be successful never ceases to baffle me.

Also the stones will be surpassed in terms of grosses and tickets sold as well as touring innovations and marketing strategies.

But that's OK.

You are surely kidding. In 2006, The Stade was full : 80,000. Sources on TV and Press gave the figure of 90,000 which I believed at that time. In 2006, a second show sold out was cancelled and postoned to 2007. The Stade was a small one which is given for 60,000. Nevertheless, the average 93,000 for U2 is impressive, though still puzzles me as the second show was not sold out and tons of ticks were available on ebay. But if Billboard - Bible wrote.....

let's see what U2 is doing in another 15-17 years....
when did they start their band, the late 70's?

Bono needs to sing and not preach if he wants me to go to another show. And U2's newest album, got it as a gift and have never listened to it.

Mind you, I like U2 up to ;Mysterious ways' and think the "Joshua Tree" is in the top 5 albums ever.
