Fogerty has one of the greatset rock voices of all time. It was more his sound to my ears than the songs (and they are great too) that grabbed me.

When he's wailing out "I put a spell on you" it is mesmorising.

I don't fancy their sound too much, but several songs are quite cool.

ask Bill Wyman. he told me that he would have joined CCR hadn't he joined the Stones.
Bill's Rhythm Kings do Green River and I Put A Spell On You, the latter also being covered by CCR

thanks for posting this thread, CCR is my second fav band of all times!

Great band, true voice of American 70's rock! Brian loved them and wanted to start a new band modeled after CCR. Played a huge gig last night in Jakarta and the second song we did was Born On A Bayou! The crowed loved it!!!!! Next up we are learning Commotion, another swamp chugger!

The number of great, memorable songs they did in a short timespan of only a handful of years matches the creativity of the Stones, Beatles, Dylan at their respective creative peaks.

Willy and the Poor Boys was the first album I bought and I still like it very much. The guitar on Effigy really made an impression, raw and melodic at the same time.

I had a feeling I'd be divulging this at some point...
When I was a youngster in tap dancing class, we had to do a
performance to one of their songs. It was the instructors' decision.
That's No Cal in the '70s for ya. cool smiley

Somebody tell me though, WHAT did happen that Fogerty will not even speak to Cooke and Clifford?

When Fogerty had his falling out with Saul Zaentz at Fantasy over the issue of copyrights and a large sum of money invested in an offshore bank, it created a major riff within the band.

The rest of the band depended on touring and new album releases for money as they were not songwriters and didn't participate in publishing royalties from the album sales. They needed tour revenue and artist royalties on sales of new releases.

Fogerty was still making a lot of money anyway because even though Saul Zaentz owned the publishing, he still (by law) had to fork a lot of money over to JF for what is called the songwriter share. Also,as the songwriter, JF had substantial income from the performing rights societies, and the others did not. Cooke and Clifford basically sided with Zaentz, as they were getting hurt by Fogerty's actions. Everyone looking after themselves here.

Thanks! I can see how John felt betrayed but I can also see how the others had to make a living! They did cut a pretty good album with Doug sahm but dont think the sales were that great?

The public of course sided with JF because they saw this as a struggle between
the "rock star" and the "corporate thief."

Many didn't realize that JF was still collecting huge amounts of money, he just didn't have the publishing and couldn't control the licensing.

On Sauls side, he offered a very large sum (in those days) of money for the copyrights, and JF, with his entertainment lawyers, accepted the offer. Saul also felt that he 'made' JF, who was working in the Fantasy Building as a mail clerk, fronting a band called The Golliwogs who at Sauls request, remaned themselves CCR.
Fantasy was primarily a blues and jazz catalog so this was a big step sideways for Saul to give CCR. a rock band, a recording contract.

The offshore bank account story is a book by itself.

Chorus:
Vanz can't dance, but he'll steal your money,
Watch him or he'll rob you blind. (x 4)

Chorus

Out in the street a crowd is gatherin',
Pushed down by the heat of the building, they're wantin' to dance.
Makin' their way up the street, a boy with a pig and a radio;
Little billy can work on the crowd, put 'em into a trance,
For the little pig vanz.

Chorus

You're watchin' 'em dance, not a care in the world;
So billy and vanz get busy, they're makin' their move;
The little pig knows what to do, he's silent and quick, just like oliver twist;
Before it's over, your pocket is clean,
A four-legged thief paid a visit on you.
