Claudine & Some Girls
Posted by: tops06 ()

Just wondering what you all think about Claudine and where it may have fit in on the Some Girls album.

If what I have read is correct this song would have appeared on the Some Girls album/record/CD.

My question is - where would you place this song on Some Girls? Would Some Girls have been an even stronger record with this song included? Would it have not fit on this record?

Thanks - TOPS06

It would have made a great B-side for one of the singles. Miss you had Faraway Eyes, so I think Claudine could have been great too.

Side A:
01. Miss You (Longer 12" Version)
02. When The Whip Comes Down
03. Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)
04. Some Girls
05. Respectable

Side B:
01. Faraway Eyes
02. Claudine (Acoustic Version)
03. Before They Make Me Run
04. Beast Of Burden
05. Shattered

Put "lies" as b-side of "Miss You"

I like Claudine too but there is no way it should have bumped Lies off the record. Lies is a highlight, I love it.

if anything it should have been on ER

Most of you will probably know this but the main reason it didn't appear anywhere was due to the fear of legal repercussions.

Kick out Miss You and (i) you have a far better record, and (ii) tons of space to add Claudine and leave Lies

Mick Jagger kick out a #1 single? I think not.

Whilst it was recorded for Some Girls, I distinctly remember reading in the NME or Melody Maker just before the release of ER that it had to be pulled from THAT album.

What album it should have been on is a moot point. It was a litigious song and, as long as Ms. Longet is alive (she's now 67), it'll remain unreleased because it still is.

Kick out Miss You and their last number 1 would have been Angie! Miss You though I am cooked on it by this time was/is a great song. It created an instant grroove to the record. Claudine would have fit excellent anywhere on the album its only ten songs long. And yes it was left off do to legal repercussions.

Normally I don't like after-the-fact speculative tinkering with what is already done, but I have to admit that this track list makes it an even stronger album.

"Lies" is fine, but always seemed too similar (in a lesser way) to "Respectable."

I've always found Claudine to be absolutely boring and I'm glad they left it off of ER. The versions on Static In The Attic are terrible. If that's how the song is then it was a good idea to leave it off.

Instead of the 12" version of Miss You how about a different edit version of it - less saxophone and include more lyrics, the whole 'girls come and go they're just like streetcars/sometimes I feel abandoned' bit and include the extended breakdown with the keyboard and kick drum bit.

Ah hell, screw it - I'll make my own version.

simple fix - "pauline's back in jail again" and off we go....

That would mean Mick would have to listen to old songs and old tapes and he's not into that. He doesn't like to do that. Even thought he LOVES to play the old songs live.

he's done it before - so young, as an example

What was done to So Young exactly?

Ah well it says new vocals, new lyrics.

Like Mick sat down and thought - Remember that song from Some Girls that we didn't finish? I'd like to finish it NOW.

I find that difficult to believe. Of ALL the songs in the can, they did THAT ONE.

mick re-recorded vox for it - a some girls-era tune taht was released as b-side in '95. supposedly he did a few more of these for the album of tunes that never made it on the rumored '99 album, "memory hotel." i think the rumors had some credence....

What a horrible name for that album if it was to come out. And all B-sides and tossers like So Young? We already have Sucking In The Seventies...which I actually LIKE heh heh...

Mick Jagger and Bill Wyman discuss Claudine.

Taken from the vinyl bootleg "Saturday Night Special".

Indian Girl running in the background...so must be 1980.

A great bit, thanks!

Can anybody explain to who Claudine was and what the problem would've been with releasing it?

Cheers!

Skipstone - Remember Tattoo You that was almost all material from the "can"

According to Wikipedia she did the 'accident' in 1976.

She was married to Andy Williams until 1975 - and he gave her moral support through her trial. (a pop star in her own right through 60s and seventies).

Her defence lawyer achieved a very light sentence for her. She started dating him (he was married!). The they later married! - and still are.

Should make a good song!

At the time my friend's older brother had a note taped on the wall:

"SPIDER! VOT DOS DIS BUTTON DO??"

Still cracks me up.

It's just a nice little outtake. No more- no less!
Fans tend to hype stuff like this.

It wouldn't have made ER any better!

.... AND they screwed up the mix ---the piano is WAY up and the guitars and the solo especially WAY down...naturally...take the guts out of a rippin'little jam and turn up jagger's new vocal.....sigh...

Cant say I agree. It's no masterpiece, but it swings like a bastard.

Wouldnt have made ER better? Each to their own, but I cant see what's so superior about turds like Indian Girl.

Yeah, Indian Girls is a complete turkey to me too!
But I don't see that tracks like Claudine would have lift the album as a whole to greater highs!
Of course you can always replace one or two bummers with another filler . .
