The Who for me - a super-group really!

The Stones, as a band were brilliant. I say "were" in the past tense!
Taylor would be the best guitarist out of all 3 bands.

As far as answering the question,I believe the best musicians are the ones that made the best music. For me, it's the members of the Stones, followed by the Beatles, but obviously, each of these three bands made some fine music.

Thats not what the question asked though. Its who were technically the best musicians. As for which of the three made the best music, the Stones unquestionably. Entirely different subject.

Merry Christmas!

Gazza, here was the question:

Which band had the better musicians: The Beatles, The Stones or The Who?

Given that the job of a musician is to make music, the best musicians are the ones that make the best music; it cannot be that better musicians make lesser music -- the only answer is they are not, in fact, better at making music. They're only better at impressing people.

Anyway, it's just my argument -- it's not gospel.

Great question.

The Beatles...superb songwriters...very innovative musicians...John was very solid on the guitar, Paul can play every instrument, George is excellent...the dueling solos in The End is a tribute to all three guitarist, Ringo could be the weakest of the bunch musically; however, that is a facile conclusion since their music was driven by the backbeat and Ringo was the backbeat.

The Rolling Stones...musically innovative during the Brian Jones era, and musically expressive during the Mick Taylor years.
Bill is, for the most part outside of Stones fans, a very underrated bassist.
Charlie is so rock solid steady.
Keith, well his isn't known as the King of the Riff for nothing.

The Who...Moon was a monster on the drums, John was equally a monster on the bass, Pete is an excellent and expressive guitarist.

The Beatles songwriting is were their the strongest so for that catagory they do and should get the nod as the best.

The Rolling Stones are muscially so very solid but I'd give the edge of musicianship to The Who.

Moon & Entwistle have both fundamentally changed the approach to their respective instruments.

As musicians, The Who were better than both the Stones and the Beatles.

But overall, I think The Who were not as good a band as the Beatles or the Stones.

I see that you're being objective about who were the best musicians. Im refering to your last sentence here: Its nice on a stones board to once in a while see someone unupalogeticaly say The Stones made the best music. But then again, if people said that all the time this wouldn't be to board that it is...that's what makes it interesting.

I'm so glad McCartney is getting credit here for his all around amazing skills with every instrument.

His guitar leads were simply phenomenal, and I think, he's incredibly underappreciated in that role. He played lead on Taxman, not to mention some great work on Back in the USSR, Helter Skelter, and lots of Abbey Road, including the best part (imho) of the guitar outro on The End.

The Who (3)........but that makes them not the greatest band (but that was not the question)
Mick Taylor the best guitar player and McCartney the best overall musician

I understand that bastard... however I think its an interesting topic. The bottom line is they were all so different musically after 67. You are right there is no "better" musician. However some musicians are more talented than others. The Herman Hermits were great musicians too, NOT. We are talking about the big three here. The Beatles had great songs but how good were they playing all of them live? The concert on the roof its probably one of few examples and I really like that gig... by then they were playing different songs than the stuff they did in germany where they were an awesome RnR band. The Let it Be album is not a george martin produced record, I guess thats the way they sounded, its more of live thing. The who is regarded the best live band ever ... Ya' Ya's prooves the stones were hot in 69 ... It's a shame The beatles didn't go on the road in 69 or 70 with the gear able to hear themselves and penetrate de bleatlemania screaming...

Paul was the best musician of all three bands - hands down.

what is a "better" musician? a musician who can play things that others cant play?

music is all about f-e-e-l-i-n-g!

technical skills help, but its the feeling what counts. and of course, you need great songs. without the songs, even the greatest musicians are worthless.

The Beatles, The Stones or The Who - they all had great and timeless songs. terms like "better" dont work here, it comes down to personal taste wether you prefer the music created by The Beatles, The Stones or The Who. Is Substitute better than 19th Nervous Breakdown or Paperback Writer?

see, the term "better" is really for sports, totally agree with guitarbastard here. in sports, the one who runs faster, jumps higher or shoots more goals is "better".

in music, how should it work like in sports? higher chart position = better music?

its personal preferences. music is about feeling and feelings. thats what makes it different from sports.

Technically speaking The Who have played some very complex music compare to the Beatles and The Stones. Complexity doesn't always mean better quality but it means that the musicians who are playing are virtuosos. That being said I prefer the sound of the Stones better, but I am always amazed when I watch a video of the Who at how a powerful and talented bunch of musicians they were.

The Who without a doubt IMHO.
Enstwitle was the best bass player IMO and Moon the best drummer.
It's difficult to say who's the better guitar player but it's at least fair to say that Townshend is the same as the other guys and Roger is a awesome rock singer. After the Who I would say the Beatles and then the Stones.
I think that as musicians they're less then those other two bands but ones you put them together it all clicked like no other band. Charlie is a good drummer but by far not in the same league as Moon and the same goes for Wyman and Enstwitle but Charlie and Bill together... Forget about it, the best rhythm section. Like Keith said in the BBC interview of the No Security tour, "were all pretty lousy but put uss together and sum of it is so much more".

Cheers,
Wuudy

sorry but for me its Entwistle on the bass. I was fortunate enough to see him with The Who shortly before his death. The bass playing was just astonishing. Love Wyman too of course!

The Who get my vote on this one...Even though Moon has been gone a long time, the playing & interaction of Entwistle, Townshend, and Ringo's kid (LOL) as seen on the later day performance gig at the Royal Albert Hall (recorded for DVD in 2000) is pretty amazing...
