I think is too close to call... The Beatles had so much help from Gearge Martin and also from those pop tunes and melodies.. The stones had Brian doing incredible stuff for a while..,. great bands!!

Probably The Who, from a technical point of view.

The answer is Led Zeppelin.

Guitar skills, a possible rating:

1 Taylor

2 Townsend (close 2nd)

3 Harrison

Discuss.

I would put McCartney above Harrison, while he was the bass player most of the time, his guitar playing runs circles around George, IMO.

Led Zeppelin and The Band are not in the discussion, although I think Garth Hudson is the musician of probably any band.

The Who by far. Townshend is a great all round guitarist. Entwhistle and Moon were something special.

Well, you can't really say the WHO because Moon is dead and Daltry doesn't PLAY an instrument. The Stones no longer have Taylor and Brian was over-rated IMO, because he was a dabbler; he dabbled at sitar, recorder, slide, and then he died too. Yes, he could play instruments after a short time BUT was he a master at them? No. He did play a very nice slide guitar and harmonica too but he wasn't around long enough for his legacy to be complete.
The Beatles learned a lot in a short time; Harrison was a very gifted musician, I think very under-rated! Paul wrote amazing songs with John, could play bass, drums and piano. John was more than adequate on guitar and piano and was a genius with lyrics. His simplicity was his strength. Ringo, oh well, 3 out of 4 ain't bad.
I think as a collective unit, you have to say the Beatles were better musicians. It kills me to say that but it may be true! Mick was not a guitar player for their first 13 or so years. He never played keyboards or guitar until 1975 on stage;he has improved immensely. Keith and Ronnie CAN be amazing but they are not consistent. Charlie is steady, not flashy but very steady. Bill Wyman was sometimes over looked, a very good bass player! Maybe it's because the Beatles were ground-breakers that they get the nod. Everything they did as musicians was copied by everyone! The pressure made them better as musicians.

Who is a better painter: Picasso, Monet or Michelangelo?

Who is a better writer: Kant, Dostojevski or Sartre?

Which is better: a jazz drummer or a heavy rock drummer?

Which is better: a jazz bassist or a heavy rock bassist?

Who is a better singer: Presley, Carreras or Paul Robinson?

I may have not interpreted the question correctly; I was thinking of the WHO today, not in their early days. Entwhistle, Moon and Townsend were formidable. As musicians( with Moon and Entwhisle ALIVE and in the 60's and 70's) I may have to give the nod also to the WHO.

And McCartney could play better leads (guitar) than both John and George.

Well, I'm not sure he was better than George on lead but he was (and is) very accomplished! George was more soulful, more fluid, example is " While My Guitar Gently Weeps". John was a rocker in the style of Chuck Berry when he let loose. Paul was my favorite Beatle back in the 60's but that was, I confess, because he was CUTE and I was YOUNG! As I got older, I paid more attention to George and John as musicians.

The Who - Best Rhythm section ever problably and Townshed who's killer on guitar.
Stones are very good as a band not as a musicians in my opinion.

Yes you can as the question refers to 'had' not 'has'. The Beatles have as many dead members as the Who have.

Incidentally, Entwistle is dead too.. an incredible musician. And Daltrey can play guitar and harmonica. However, it does a vocalist a disservice to say he's not a musician because he sings. The voice is an instrument, surely.

In a short time? They played HUNDREDS of concerts in a period of about four years before they ever got a record contract.

Harsh, Debra! Ringo was a fine drummer. This thing about him barely being able to play is a myth (as is that line attributed to Lennon about him not even being the best drummer in the Beatles - he never said it)

Paul - the best songwriter of our lifetime. Great singer, basssist, pianist, guitarist, etc.

Not too good at choosing second wives.

2nd place - the much underrated Keith Richards

Gazza, we both like Lucinda and Dylan, and I get Springsteen (the first two albums are my favorites, though, so it's been a while since I was really a fan), but I just disagree about the Who, especially as compared to the Stones. Ok, actually I disagree so much I can barely speak or breathe...

Let's not argue it though, as I'm sure you're as stubborn as I am.

Merry Christmas. Ain't life great?

As far as answering the question,I believe the best musicians are the ones that made the best music. For me, it's the members of the Stones, followed by the Beatles, but obviously, each of these three bands made some fine music.
