Bob Greene's 1974 book Billion Dollar Baby is a fly on the wall account of the original group on tour and in the studio, and it's depiction of the friction between band members played a role in their break-up at the time. This reunion is heartwarming, but it's ridiculous to expect them to be as good as they were over 50 years ago. Are any of us?

Quoteslewan at least joing the Stones got Ronnie steady job (which also saved him from being forgotten and/or spending his days playing in backstreet bars) He already had a great "steady" job with Faces and was doing quite well.

Quotetomcasagranda The Solomon Burke original. The Stones covers do nothing for me, I'm afraid. Does that include "Not Fade Away?"

Leon Russell said shortly afterwards that his original idea was for Mick to make an appearance during his "Jumpin'Jack Flash/Youngblood" medley, where Mick would suddenly jump over the amps and surprise everyone by singing along on JJF when it is performed a second at the end. Whether Mick was ever approached about this, or it was just Leon's pipe dream I cannot say.

Like Joe Cocker when he died, I'm sure most people assumed that Roberta Flack had already been inducted when they read the news of her passing. I'm certain someday she will be. It's an embarrassment to the HoF that she wasn't included during her lifetime.

I just wish that the Stones had released "Hot Stuff" in 1975 as a single (and a new track for Made In The Shade) during the '75 tour. Maybe with "Worried About You" as the B-side? It would have put them way ahead of the curve in terms of dance/disco music.

QuoteEleanor Rigby RW was awesome with the Faces..dropped off technically with the Stones..maybe too drunk/too comfortable/less responsibility were the reasons. His Faces efforts were top class Lester Bangs said that when Ronnie joined the Stones he "took a civil service job." In other words, he didn't have to work as hard. The Stones kept him on a short leash, and didn'

It can be nice...but one time I was reading some comments on an old thread that resurfaced, and I thought, "I agree with this post 100%" And then when I looked to see who wrote it, it turns out I was agreeing with myself! I had totally forgotten that I had written

First thing I ever read by Feiffer was his book The Great Comic Book Heroes, a personal history of the comics in the '40's that he read as a kid which was the first of it's kind and a very influential work in the comic book scene. His "Feiffer" strip that ran in the Village Voice was a fixture in the Sunday L.A.Times Calendar section, and collections of those works wer

This documentary explores the influence of The Wizard of Oz on Lynch: Before he played John Ford, he had a similar part in an episode of Louie: Since the 70's when Eraserhead was a weekly midnight movie at the Nuart in L.A., being in the audience when a David Lynch film was on the screen was like participating in a collective dream. He was his own genre, with a style tha

Stanley Booth's article for The Saturday Evening Post that featured his fly-on-the-wall view of the recording session for Otis Redding's "Dock of The Bay" is one best pieces of music reporting ever. You feel like you are one of the lucky people there in the room at Stax on that very historic day whenever you read it.

Let me start by saying something that will be regarded as totally sacrilegious around here: I think that "Run, Rudolph, Run" is way overrated. I believe that it's reputation among Stones' fans is based on the fact that for years it was pretty obscure. It was released on a 45 without much fanfare and didn't get much airplay. Then it was hard to find. I bought it when

This 1977 "tribute" to The Beatles was a nightmare. I remember seeing this when it was broadcast and it was unbelievably bad. Today it is still jaw-dropping, yet there are spots that had me laughing so hard that my sides ached.

That cover is as UN-emotional as it could possibly be. The images are boring, and the fonts don't convey any kind of human feeling. I think a big reason they went that way was to mask the beard Mick was sporting. It doesn't match the feel of the music.

QuoteMadMax This is a holy grail for me since around 2004, I've never come across it in a record store but I sure would love to have it. Love this record. "My Baby Gives It Away" got a fair amount of FM radio airplay when it was released, but it is correct to say that the album wasn't a big commercial hit. Yes, that's Charlie playing on that song (and Ronnie

God I miss Bill Graham. I never knew why he called Ronnie that multiple times on The Last Waltz. I knew a guy whose last name was Wood, and he said it was a common mistake for someone to call him "Woods."

I was struck by the fact that five--six if you consider "Honky Tonk Women" as a close enough version of "Country Honk"-- of the songs from this show came from the Let It Bleed album. After all these years of EOMS hoopla, is it time to reconsider this as the Stones' greatest album?

I didn't want to bother him, but I watched how gracious he was to total strangers who approached him during the minute or so while going through security, getting ticket scanned, etc. It sounded like one guy who said they had a mutual friend was proposing some sort of busine
