Maybe Charlie wasn't the most flashy of drummers. But I can still remember the day I first heard the explosive toms at the start of Honky Tonk Women. And that's what hooked me onto the Stones. I didn't know Charlie the person. But I knew him as a musician. A musician who played the backbeat of my life. Always there, whether I've been happy or sad. But whenever I hear the St

Yes, I have this single, or at least very similar, with that cover, too. In fact I think it might be one of the first Stones singles I bought - second hand from a record store in Southampton. I think I bought Emotional Rescue vinyl the same day. I remember sitting on the bus on the way home getting excited to play them and reading all the notes and looking at massive the poster in ER. Unfortun

What a great inclusive bunch of people, ranging from 19 to 75 years old, covering three generations. Mean 55 Median 56 Mode 50 What the "average" does not convey though is that the majority of those who answered (almost three quarters) are 50 years old or more. I wonder how many lied about their age though?

I also noticed this and though it was used to amazing effect. In fact m girlfriend does not know the song (or that it was by the Stones) but she mentioned it too. The song has such a menacing sound despite being funky. Perfect choice. It strikes me that it must be a fun job to be the music producer or consultant for film and TV. If I did the job though I bet it would be a Stones heavy list

Brian May has his own sound and you can always clearly hear that it's him playing. It might not be your thing, but he is no doubt a great guitarist. Whether he is "the best" is subjective but this sort of opinion poll clearly shows that many guitarists admire him and think he is "the best". One thing that sets him apart is that he composes his guitar solos when not p

There are a fair few songs which I was not keen on when I heard the album but came to love after hearing live. Streets of Love is an extreme example. You Got Me Rocking Now worked in reverse and although I like the original I don't particularly like to hear it live.

The Isle of Wight festival 2007 show was pretty short and only 15 songs. Taken from the IORR review: Start Me Up You Got Me Rocking Rough Justice Love In Vain (with guest Paolo Nutini) Can't You Hear Me Knocking Ain't Too Proud To Beg (with guest Amy Winehouse) Tumbling Dice --- Introductions I Wanna Hold You (Keith) Slipping Away (

Drums are easier to start off with as a beginner, at least in terms of "banging out" a beat. To become accomplished at the instrument, both are as hard as each other. However, some people will find one or other easier to learn depending on their own talents.

I would second the Stanley Booth book. It's my favourite Stones book along with Life.

And whilst we are on the subject of sound, I am always intrigued by the way the band plays on the B stage. Given the large distance between the front of house speakers and the stage, there must be a significant delay when they are on stage. As a musician, this can be very confusing - especially for Charlie - which is likely why he wears the headphones. I guess Keith and Ronnie rely on the c

Last year I saw them in Southampton, Twickenham and Coventry. From more or less the same position in the field, I would say that Southampton and Twickenham were "normal" volume but Coventry was ear splittingly loud! So I guess it depends on venue acoustics as well as whether they have any external noise limits. At Coventry, I don't think there were any residential premises nearby

QuoteDandelionPowderman Quotesjs12 I love this song and think it is one of the better latter day singers recordings. However, I just don't see how it could possibly work as a live stadium number, as much add I'd like to see it. Perhaps he could pull out a debut of a song from the new album? If one exists. It won't happen but is a nice thought. Why not? Check it out here from

As others have said, the mixing and mastering is not Don Was's fault. If you listen to this version of YGMR I wonder why they didn't keep things a bit more simple though...

Traditionally, shepherd's pie was a dish to use up the leftovers of yesterday's roast lamb. So it would have bits of meat (rather than minced lamb) and vegetables in it. And most likely meat gravy (as opposed to a tin of tomatoes) as the basis of the sauce..

Hoping it's nothing serious and wishing Mick a full recovery. Its not the first time shows have been postponed for various reasons, both health and tax related. But is it the first time am entire tour leg has been postponed? Maybe UK Bridges to Babylon leg and first few shows of A Bigger Bang are the nearest?

QuoteChristos So many similarities... This is exactly what struck me the moment I saw the cover art. IF you were going to try and do something reminisence of a previous album cover, Jump Back would not be the obvious starting point. I would have thought either something entirely new, something based around the No Filter theme or back to the archives with an interesting twist would hav

Quotejlowe Surely the State of Florida would make sense. And when they tire of rehearsing Satisfaction for the 20th time, they could take a break and do some recording at one of the many fine studios down there. If Mick can't get his mates to join him in the studio he can enrol some of the very competent studio musicians. Or have some guest blues players. You don't have to credit any

I'd love to see him do Coming Down Again. Along with bringing back connection. Some of my most memorable moments at Stones gigs have been the slow songs in the Keith slot. Slipping Away, The Worst, The Nearness of You, You Got the Silver, to name a few... The crowd singing you got the silver at Hyde Park is an especially great memory for me.

I had never noticed that before (the speed or the additional verse). Listening to both side by side it's an interesting choice. I think maybe the faster pace worked better for a video and the extra verse perhaps made for a better story line? Quite a funny video, but VERY dated now.

Now, I sometimes get the feeling that the only allowed themes are to discuss where to buy tickets and book hotels. Just an observation. But I guess I'm the only one who has noticed that... IORR

Some great Stones tunes have come about through essentially being written by Keith with noodling lyrics which are then taken by Mick and extensively rewritten and updated. Gimmie Shelter comes to mind. Sometimes Mick also comes up with great "Keith style" songs - Brown Sugar comes to mind Let's hope their are some good examples on the upcoming album...

Luckily I was staying for the night in Hounslow so didn't have to experience those issues with transport. What I did have to experience though was the ridiculous organisation and security. Who's idea was it to hand armbands out at the entrance to GA insted of when you enter the stadium? Just before the Stones were due on there were huge queues to get onto the pitch. Everytime you we

QuoteCaledonianGonzo Miss You has grown in popularity in recent years among younger and newer Stones fans. Not playing it would piss people off, particularly folk who only go to one show. Whereas if you go to multiple shows, a lot of setlist repetition is the price you're going to pay. Yep you've hit the nail on the head. 99% of the audience are going to one Rolling Stones show

Speaking to a friend last night, he says the thing he really likes about the stones is how they vary the setlist. He's a Clapton fan where you get an identical setlist totalling about 15 songs every night.

The old style stages had a wow factor the moment you walked into the stadium. The new NF style stage does not create a wow factor until the show starts and even then not until it's dark. Personally, I prefer the larger higher definition screens of this tour. It means that even those at the back of the concert get a really good experience. In particular I would like to highlight the b
