QuoteThe Greek Quote71Tele Sorry if this has been covered before. I knew that Bill made his own bass, modifying (I believe) a Dallas Tuxedo. However, I was quite surprised to learn it was a fretless. His playing on the records and live does not sound like a fretless. Does anyone have any detailed info about this or about what pickups, etc. were on this bass? Much appreciated, fellow musicians.

I could make arguments for any one of the four but since the question was who do you miss the most, I've got to go with Ian Stewart. Was it Charlie who commented at his funeral along the lines of "Who's going to tell us off now?" I don't know that any of the Stones were truly worried about replacing Brian (they seemed to want to), Mick Taylor, Or Bill Wyman (as long as

Anders is GREAT! Love his Ash Wednesday Blues album... Gotta love an album with an opening tune titled "Stoned, Drunk & Naked"! While that may have been the tune that made me buy the album, I think the title track has become my favorite. Also recommend his "Living Room" album. I've got a couple others as well but these are my favorites. Anybody heard his new alb

Note: Although it may be insignificant compared to the loss of human lives and the losses of some families who lost everything (I live 2 hours from Nashville and know some of these folks), if you are a musician who feels anything emmotional for a wooden instrument, I highly reccomend NOT looking at the photos that accompany this article. Painful. Another Article (no destroyed instrument pictu

Quotekleermaker Well, mr dja, I wrote my last post without having read yours before (I saw it after that). I think in my turn that you come pretty close to what I mean, though StonesTod claims you as a witness of his own opinion, which is just fun. A nice story. In my opinion you say: I enjoy the music of my daughter very much (of course!) but I know that it's not of great quality. It

kleermaker - glad to see you ignored StonesTod's "period". In my opinion you're doing a good job articulating a difficult point to make. Funny to see that he/she has also ignored his/her own “period”. I think that most people have a tendency to confuse their own opinions for facts and their own personal preferences for indications of quality. I think what StonesTod lef

Kudos to stones77 for posting what he just learned from the club. As a Newbie you could have just sunk into the background and faded from memory. Way to "man up". Although you got off to a rocky start, welcome to IORR... You'll find it to be a pretty cool forum... BV does a great job and the users seem to be, for the most part, pretty cool. Peace, Mr DJA

Martinw: Out of curiosity I did a Google search for left handed mandolin and found many hits. Sites where you could order & buy. Not being a mandolin player myself, I couldn't judge on the prices but I'd have to guess that the seller's are pretty proud of their left handed mandolins! Not for the entry level player anyway. It sounds like you're doing OK with your re-

I'm right handed in everything I do except Hockey. I was a goalie and because I liked the glove on my hand - from baseball I learned Hockey left-handed. I also learned to golf left-handed but, once I progressed past miniature golf and found out how expensive golf clubs are, I quickly learned how to play right-handed. I must say, that although I don't recommend re-stringing a guitar

They've been 'minus Lowell' for over thirty years but they're still one of the best live bands anywhere. The set list is never the same though they almost always do "Dixie Chicken" in one of two arrangements, a 10-12 minute version or one tha

Simple answer: Yes, he's a good guitar player. Complex answer: He's lucky that he fell in so naturally with Larry Mullen & Adam Clayton & Bono. While I think that Bono has the chops to have fronted another band, gone solo, etc., I think that Edge, Larry & Adam fall into the category of "The Sum Is Larger Than The Individual Parts". While they are all technicly

Quotemickschix Thank you, Mr_DJA, that was helpful and encouraging. I don't have any missing fingers but the index and middle finger on my left hand ( my chording hand) are a bit shorter than they should be...some folks don't notice it but I am very self-conscious about it. The real problem is I can't bend them enough to form chords..they do bend somewhat but it's tough. Plus

I may get slack for this comment, but I really don't understand how someone can enjoy guitar-playing on record, but not want to pick up the instrument and have a go themselves. I find it baffling. ask professional rock critics how they do it... Thanks for the laugh cc! Ironic that right now on my CD player here at the office is Mississippi Fred McDo

ChrisM, Not familiar with the Gibson Bass... Although I respect the company, and own one of their guitars (a LP Jr), their bass necks have always seemed "chunky" to me. I prefer the "slimmer" style of the Fenders and their clones. Again, unfortunately, I play full scale, 34" necks so I'm going out of my relm by discussing short scale necks. I did a search at

Guitar is my sanity device. It's what I play at home to relax. Bass is what I got a college degree in, made a living with, teach on the weekends and still get paid to play on a fairly regular basis (but definitely DON'T make a living with - I HATED that JOB - I played pop country in the 90's). No, and no. I meant that using a compressor, or a compressor effect, alters sometimes badly the bass guitar sound - The "for good" line refers to the (bad) habits, not to anything that technically cannot be override I did't realize some bass players did't have their own amp anymore - how does it feel playing this way ? Don't you feel lost a little when you don

OK two questions for the Guitar experts as I'm a bass player 1st and guitar player second. Regarding Open G tuning and the minor chord posted above... Open G Tuning Low to High (Pitch) DGDGB - and then what? is the high pitched E tuned down to D just like the low? Can you tell I play 99.99% open tuning? The other .01% might might involve just a drop D tuning. 71Tele mentioned shapin

Oh Yeah I got the humor. Loved it in fact. I've got a pretty warped/twisted sense of humor though I try to keep it toned down on message boards as, with no "tone of voice" and possible language issues, it can be hard to communicate humor and sarcasm sometimes. With all the different languages and cultures represented here it can be hard sometimes to scroll through all of the m

Following theories/questions assume that the person who told the story about Matt Clifford recording Mick Taylor updates for Exile was blowing smoke... Why does everyone seem to think The Stones would go to Taylor for these updates? Because he was there for the original sessions? So was Mick Jagger. So was Keith Richards. Over the last 30+ years The Rolling Stones haven't seemed to p
