I don't know, the connection seems forced to me. Gladwell overlooks the fact that mick writes 3 and only 3 verses--all that's needed--and they begin to "cut" the tune. It seems like laziness, or at best, efficiency, rather than overflowing genius. Anyone who actually listens to the Stones would tend to think that's keith's department, and managing the flow is mick

I don't think "Highwire" is angry at all, just somewhat cynical, but not even so much as some of their earlier "political" work. I mean, "it's all a business" -- isn't that mick's own philosophy?

Quotephd Highwire is to me the latest great Keith song. He parodies himself a little bit but damned a good one. Bombed by the music industry. I tend to think that this commercial disaster put an end to Keith as a writer. it's mick playing the main guitar. can a one-off single be a "commercial disaster"?

Quotelapaz62 Have a look at Dylan Live Aid with Richards and Wood, pathetic, maybe the legend outlived the man a long time ago. yeah, truly a defining moment, you're right ... the 25 years since then are meaningless.

Quote24FPS Quotecc Quote24FPS Pretty run of the mill. Listened to it just now for the first time in a long, long time. Usually they add something extra or new to a song, well, they used to, and my opinion hasn't changed that this really isn't special. so the evocative lyrics and the fact that it's an 8-bar, minor-key blues written by ron, rather than a 12-bar, major-key blues

QuoteStonesTod Quotecc QuoteThe Wick Quotecc so did ron write the chord progression for this tune? It's not really like any of their other blues. Great performance all around, though. I remember reading in an interview a while ago where he said this was his song. This is one of Ron Wood's finest ever moments. thanks -- it's not really a standard 12-bar progression, and it'

I guess it's the Stones fan in me that enjoys this tour, not even really for taylor's playing, which I don't focus on, but for the general British rock'n'roll orientation of the whole band. But I can see the point that bob is not at his most engaged, and he has some of the almost childish phrasings that he would use on the Petty tour, which I definitely don't enjoy--

I bring this up every time these songs get discussed -- lyrically, they're both too cautious, even if, as marco writes, the phrases are blunt. mick hedges his bets in both songs. "Highwire" is not really anti-war, it just addresses (fairly accurately) the politics behind Gulf War I, then "supports the troops" in a very safe way. "Sweet Neo Con" is even more cowa

Quotepalerider22 You can think what you like about Aerosmith but at least they're still 'alive'. They're only 3-4 years younger then the Stones but they had several hit albums and songs in the 90's and into the 2000's...and are still quite cool...no moss on these guys. They, apparently, are looking forward to a future as well. This 'American Idol thing?...shrewd

this was it: I couldn't really tell whether CS Blues was being screened or not, or if they were being coy with the info to avoid a problem. The thing is, as this article explains, Frank was appearing at a Manhattan location later in the evening to screen a different film. But the Williamsburg place's web site left a gap in the schedule for "Program 1," the early show. Anyw

"Downed" comes up every time I listen to Pandora internet radio. I didn't like it much at first--hadn't heard any Cheap Trick past "Budokan"--but I've gotten to admire it. I don't really buy the psychedelic "Dear Prudence" part, but in the rest, the band really goes for it.

hey, I read a few days ago that CS Blues will be screened tonight in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, with Robert Frank there and all. But I read it offline somewhere, and I don't remember the details! Has anyone else heard about this? If you can find the info, and you go to the show, I'll buy you a beer...

what tape were you listening to, Palace? No doubt the guitar mix was trebly in '81, but many of the soundboards that we have make it worse.

QuoteFrom4tilLate Chris Miller stated in an interview that "Miss You" was a rare (very rare) instance in which Bill "took over" the sound when they were tracking. True, Billy Preston wrote the tune (or the core of it), but the bass line is Bill's. Tommy who's Chris Miller?

Quoteloog droog Love this line: Mendelsohn: Look, I feel the same way most days, but I think that has more to do with the fact that classic rock radio refuses to play anything that the listening public doesn’t find immediately recognizable. It’s a symptom of the simultaneous over commercialization of rock and perceived idiocy (real or not) of the people it serves. And let’s be honest, as g

QuoteDoxa Lyrically - especially the title - it is clearly close to "She's So Cold" but musically, as I argued above, it reminds me very much of "Star Star". It is very basic straight-forward Chuck Berry-style rocker, starting from the guitar intro, plus a nice melodic hook in its chorus. ... She Was Hot" is a bit oddity. I think for that reason they made the ret

Quotestupidguy2 Great song. Maybe one of the saddest songs Jagger has ever written. Its not just the words, but his delivery. He sounds so defeated and hopeless. yes, but there's also some reveling in the intensity of the feeling, almost pleasure. More bittersweet than sad, I think. A brilliant reflection on aging, somehow. also, I'll point out before someone else surely will, that

QuoteDoxa I think VOODOO LOUNGE was a kind of 'nostalgy trip' for all of them to do it like they once did. The result was not any new inspiring songs, or the band finding new ways of self-expression but the very opposite: a retro album that sounds like The Rollings Stones plays a lot of safe and sure, familiar Rolling Stones sounding songs. I guess many liked it but I found that extremi
